Preserving a Picturesque America (PAPA) an organization striving to protect the natural and historic places through the power of the arts, will make a visit in Chimney Rock Village May 4. By fi nding the vantage points of the original 1800s artists from the publication Picturesque America are continuing the legacy they started. The original serial contained almost 1,000 pieces of art. Although they are seeking all of them, they focus on one section at a time in order to promote local awareness and create local chapters. They are now focusing on the 12 engravings that featured scenes mostly along the French Broad River. Founder Scott Varn has been gathering artists from eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina for several years and has been guiding them to the vantage points of the original artist Harry Fenn. Although a national project, local activism is critical and artist Christopher Holt is the new president of the local WNC chapter. He and over 30 other artists have come together to create an exhibition and art sale this fall. The funds raised will go directly to saving these locations as well as to improving the health of the French Broad River. To promote the upcoming exhibition, Scott along with artist and writer Mike Wurman will be doing something that has not been done in over 100 years. They will be on an 80 mile journey from Chimney Rock to Del Rio, Tennessee along the Buncombe Turnpike/ Drovers Road, which was the route the original artist took in 1870. Dressed in period clothing and sketchbooks in hand they will follow in the footsteps and brushstrokes of those who helped Americans see our landscape as something to be cherished rather than exploited. They will travel by horseback, foot and boat, stopping at each of the original vantage points where Harry Fenn made his renderings. They are inviting local artists and the public to meet them at each of the 12 locations to create and celebrate. On May 4, Scott and Mike begin their journey in Chimney Rock and will host a paint- out at the Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery outdoor terrace from 9:30am-12:30pm. Everyone is welcome to come learn more and watch the artists at work. Afterwards they will visit Chimney Rock State Park to explore and learn more about its history. That evening they will stay at the Pine Gables Inn and Cabins, which was in existence at the time artist Harry Fenn passed through. They hope to fi nd evidence that Fenn may have actually stayed there during his time in Chimney Rock. On the morning of May 5, Scott and Mike will depart by horseback as they make their way through the Hickory Nut Gorge along what once was known as the Drovers Road. •May 4, 9:30am-12:30; Original vantage point paint- out (Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery terrace) • May 5, 9am; Start Journey by horseback (Downtown Chimney Rock) to Sherrill's Inn • May 8, 7pm; Presentation, Celebration and art preview River Arts District RAD (8 River Arts Place) Artists wanting to participate can obtain a schedule to meet us at any of the 12 stops on the tour.
