"We have always been focused on having a sustainable business that cares for the environment, our community, and for the hardworking people that make it possible. We support our grower-part- ners in their efforts to farm for the future and set that path with the compa- ny's three-pillar approach to sustainability: People, Planet and Profit," shared Eric Valenzuela, Director of Food Safety & Sus- tainability for California Giant. The City of Watsonville Mayor's Office recent- ly presented Joe Barsi, President of California Giant, with a Certificate of Recognition praising the company's environmental Growing sustainably with the Earth's future in mind is a priority for the growers at Califor- nia Giant. Standards include a full spectrum of sustainable agricul- ture practices that cover environmental, social, economic, and business transparency. "As stewards of the land, we are extremely proud of the hard work our growers have put into their sustainable efforts. In fact, our strategic grower-partner, Satsuma Farms, who grows on California Giant-owned land in Watsonville, became the first Sustainably Grown Certified strawberry operation in the world last year. Now we have two additional local farms well on their way to achieving this same certification by the stewardship. The City's Green Business Program Award acknowledged California Giant for being the first TRUE Zero Waste Certified business in the City of Watsonville. "I am proud to receive this Certificate from the City of Watsonville on behalf of California Giant Berry Farms employees. We were awarded Gold under the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) Zero Waste certification program," said Barsi. "The Gold certification recognizes our collective achievement of divert- ing 91.24% of our office waste away from landfills and other waste outlets."
