April 2021 edition Special Advertising Supplement to the Santa Cruz Sentinel A Bounty of Discounts for Local Seniors By Tara Fatemi Walker We've all heard the clichés like "You're only as old (or young) as you feel" and "Age is just a number." But the bottom line is that many individ- uals the outside world might define as "seniors" actually feel quite young at heart. Whether or not you embrace the senior definition or label, if you're of a certain age you can take advantage of some discounts across the county. We've rounded up some of these below. Note that age requirements vary depending on the busi- ness; these are listed if the information was readily available. Two more gen- eral tips: 1) most of these require on-site as opposed to online purchases and 2) be sure to ask for the discount instead of assum- ing that a staff person will give you the lower price because you 'look like a senior.' Have some grocery or vitamin/supplement shop- ping to do? Aptos Natural Foods (831-685-3334, aptosnaturalfoods.com) of- fers 10 percent off to shop- pers 65 and older every Wednesday and Sunday. Deluxe Foods (831-688- 7442, deluxefoodsofaptos. com) has a monthly Senior Discount Day: on the first Tuesday of every month, customers 60 and older get 10 percent off. At all New Leaf Community Markets (newleaf.com) locations— Aptos, Capitola, Down- town Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and Westside SC—shoppers 65 and older get 10 percent off purchases every day. The two Staff of Life (staffof- lifemarket.com) locations, in Santa Cruz (831-423- 8632) and the brand-new Watsonville store (831- 726-0240), offer a five percent daily discount to customers over 65. This doubles to 10 percent every Tuesday through Thursday. Discounts ex- clude meat, seafood, sushi, beer and wine purchases, and any items already on sale. At Vitamin Center (831-462-4697) seniors get 10 percent off every day. At both Wild Roots Market (wildrootsmarket. com) locations, Felton and Boulder Creek, those 65 and older get a 10 percent discount Monday through Friday. This is valid for all items except sushi which is provided by a third-par- ty vendor. Seniors need to complete an application to receive their discount card. Discounts were formerly offered only two days a week; this was extended to five days a week during the pandemic and for now it's still valid every weekday. In the mood to dine out? At Auntie Mame's Café in Scotts Valley (831-438- 1840, auntiemamescafe. co), there isn't a senior discount, but staff say a lot of seniors order off the lower-priced kids' menu. Denny's (dennys.com) gives a 15 percent dis- count to AARP cardhold- ers, and the restaurant has a specific 55-plus menu. Erik's Deli (Aptos, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville, eriksdelicafe. com) offers 10 percent off to those 62 and older. Subway (subway.com) has a 10 percent discount for seniors. If you're 60 or older, you get 15 percent off at Jeffery's Restaurant (831-425-1485, jefferys- restaurant.com) and at Walnut Avenue Café (831- 457-2804, walnutavenue- cafe.com). Santa Cruz Diner (831-426-7151, santacruzdiner.com) has a pre-discounted senior menu, or those ages 65 and up can get a 15 per- cent discount on regular menu items. IHOP (831- 475-0540, ihop.com) has a special menu for those 55 years and up, featuring several items with smaller portions and lower prices. Fast food options include Taco Bell (tacobell.com) which has a 75-cent discount drink for seniors NO MORE PAIN LEARN ABOUT OUR REGENERATIVE TREATMENTS FOR CHRONIC JOINT CONDITIONS AND TAKE BACK CONTROL FROM PAIN www.trilogymedical.net FREE WEB CLASS Chronic Joint Pain: Top 5 Holistic Tools to Restore Comfort and Ease In this LIVE Web Class with Dr. Jeff Lester and Amber Weiss, PA-C, LAc., we will reveal our comprehensive, holistic approach to relieving pain naturally.
