Poplar Street, Petersburg Golfers win two last week By Andy Heuring The Charger boys' golf team picked up two wins in the last week. Team depth played a role in the Chargers' win on Monday night. The Chargers beat South Spencer after the fifth score card broke a 205 to 205 tie on the first four score- cards. In high school golf in a dual meet, each team has five or six varsity players, and they take the top four scores to get a team score. Monday night, the Charger team, which features one se- nior and five freshmen, post- ed a 205. Nathan Snyder was the medalist for the match with a 46, which included a birdie on hole seven. Other scores for the Chargers were Tyler Craig with a 48. It was the first time for the Chargers to have two of their freshmen break 50 this season at Prides Creek. "They are improving, both could have been lower, just a couple of bad holes," said Charger coach Jarrod Gideon. Senior Hunter Traylor had a 54. Three Chargers: Arri McDonald, Cobey McKinney and Lucas Taylor all had 57s. The low four golfers added to 205, as did South Spencer's top four. But when they went to the fifth score, South Spen- cer's fifth was a 60 to break the tie for the Chargers. Pike Central also beat North Knox last week, posting a 221 team score at the Bicknell Country Club. Coach Gideon said the Chargers had three golfers out of the lineup with a stomach bug. Tyler Craig led the way for the Chargers with a 48. He was followed by Na- than Snyder's 53, Arri McDon- ald's 57 and McKinney's 63. North Knox did not have four golfers and couldn't post a team score. Last Tuesday, April 20, the Chargers lost to Southridge at Huntingburg. "It may have been the coldest golf match I have ever been involved in," said Coach Gideon, who played high school and college golf. It snowed more than an inch last Tuesday night just af- ter the match ended. Southridge won the match 190 to 208. Craig, a freshman, just missed medalist honors for the Chargers on Hunting- burg's course. He shot a 47, which was just one stroke off the best score of the day. McDonald carded a 51, with Traylor one stroke back at 52 and Lucas Taylor had a 58. By James Capozella It was just like toes being stepped on Thursday, and it had to hurt when the home standing Pike Central Lady Char- gers inundated the plate with 21 runs in three innings off Wood Memorial's senior Taylor McKannan. What was awesome for the home team became a smarting injury for the Lady Trojans whose eight errors cost a lot, but giving up 16 hits was even more painful. Lady Titan hitters like Lexie Onyett, Brailey Mills, Avery Hunt, Kar- ley Kavanaugh, Alyna Sharp and Ken- zie Powell had multiples, and Onyett, Xia Stafford, Hallie Bailey, Sharp, Ka- vanaugh and Delaney Welch all contrib- uted RBIs to the tune of 18 for their four innings at the plate. Hunt and Onyett each had stolen bases and Bailey was the only hit batter. Onyett stood out from the crowd with three of four at the plate, three runs and five RBIs. Kavanagh and Powell each hammered out doubles, and ac- Hayes, Hanselman and Mills lead scoring RuNNinRage posted a 74-54 win over the Hypnotoads, with Phillip Brown, Jr. (3) scoring 22 points and one rebound at the Otwell Men's Basket- ball League this past Sunday. Jaden Hayes (50) was the top scorer for the week, with 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Hypnotoads. Hayes (50) net- ted 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Hypnotoads in their 56 -53 edging of Harlem Mon- ey. Austin Jones scored 20 points and four rebounds for the Money. Sean Handselman (9) poured in 29 points and 11 re- bounds for the Average Joes in a 91-65 win over The Tropics. The Tropics were led by Zach Hulsman (7) with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Heath Russell (7) garnered 15 points and four rebounds for the Longshots. Scott Mills (4) netted 28 points and five rebounds against the Longshots, as the Red Angels won game six 65 - 55. In game five, the Benchwarmers bettered Bus- ch Bods 62-49, led by TJ Reese (4) with 24 points and eight PC baseball wins first game this season By Mike Sandifar Pike Central hammered out 17 hits Wednesday afternoon and Coach Jacob Western's Charger Baseball Team won its first game of the 2021 sea- son, stopping Eastern Greene 16 -6 in a non-conference, high school diamond outing. The Chargers put one run across the plate in the top of the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead, but the Thunderbirds pushed two runs home in the bottom to take a narrow 2-1 advantage at one complete in- ning of baseball. Both teams scored a run in their respective half of the second inning, giving Eastern Greene a 3-2 lead after two at bats for each team. The Chargers scored a run in the top of the third stanza, then did not allow a run in the Thunderbirds' half of the in- ning to knot the score up at 3- 3 after three total innings. Neither team could mount an offensive attack in the fourth inning, leaving the score at 3-3, with the Chargers coming to the plate in the top half of the fifth inning. The Pike Central bats came alive in the top half of the fifth, and the Chargers scored three runs to take a 6 -3 advantage after five and a half innings; however, that margin was short lived, as the Thunder- birds pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to narrow the score to just a single run at 6 -5. The visitors put another run home in the top of the sixth in- ning to give Pike Central a 7- 5 lead, with the hosts coming to bat in their half of the sixth inning. The Chargers held the Thunderbirds without a score in the bottom of the inning, and the two teams headed for the seventh frame, with PCHS holding the 7-5 lead. Pike Central exploded for nine runs in the top of the sev- enth inning, giving the win- ners a 16 -5 margin and need- ing just three outs to pick up their first win of the 2021 dia- mond campaign. Eastern Greene managed to push one run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to reduce the Charger lead to 16 -6, but the Pike Cen- tral defense tightened up to shut down any real Thunder- Chargers track and field split with South Spencer The Charger boys made an 82-47 lasting impression on the South Spencer Reb- el track team last week, win- ning two relays and 10 in- dividual events, including three by Braden Howald and two by Stephen Krieg. Chambers, Chanley, Shoultz and Ridao won the 3200 relay in 9:30.28, and Shoultz, McCrary, Ridao and Chambers ran first in the 1600 relay (3:49.29). Three South Spencer Lady Rebel relay wins made for a 30 -point swing in the 72-43 loss for the Charger girls last week. Erika Vinnedge won two individual events, and Quinlan Teague and Ruby Sallee each took first place points. Vinnedge won the shot put with a toss of 30'.25", with Kayla Gladish second (26'2.5"). A toss of 87'3.5" with the discus won first for Vinnedge and 69'4.25" se- cured third for Gladish. Sallee cleared a height of 6'6" to win the pole vault and Teague ran a 12:25.40 to first in the 3200 meter run. Lauren Young had a sec- ond in the long jump, tap- ing 14'.5", and was second in the 100 hurdles, clock- ing 18.31, with Anderson Morgan third, just .01 sec- onds behind.
