INDOT announces two projects in Pike County There will be lane restric- tions on Highway 56 begin- ning on or about Thursday, April 29 on Highway 56, be- tween Highway 61 (Pike Cen- tral) and Highway 257 at Ot- well Contractors will begin lane closures in sections on S.R. 56, between S.R. 61, near Pike Central High School, and S.R. 257, south of Otwell, to begin resurfacing. As a part of this project, contractors will mill the top layer of asphalt off, make patches if needed and replace the road surface with new pavement. During the project, one 12-foot lane will be open at all times. Loads wider than 12 feet should seek an alter - nate route using the nearest numbered state, U.S. or In- terstate routes. Traffic will be controlled by flagging op- erations for the duration of the project. Depending upon weather conditions, all activ- ities are expected to be com- plete by early August. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews. PIPE PROJECT FOR SR 257, BETWEEN OTWELL AND VELPEN A pipe project on State Road 257, between Otwell and Velpen, will cause lane restrictions beginning on Monday, April 26. One lane of S.R. 257, be- tween East Division Street and East County Road 50 E., will be restricted while con- tractors install a culvert pipe liner. INDOT said the liner will extend the life of the structure at this location. During the project, work will only take place during daytime hours, with traffic controlled by flagging op- erations. What's the difference between valedictorians and salutatorians? Being named a valedictori- an or salutatorian is a signifi- cant achievement. Some stu- dents may not fully under- stand what these titles repre- sent. Every school has its own qualifications, but in general, valedictorians and salutatori- ans are those individuals who have reached the very high- est levels of academic success. VALEDICTORIAN PrepScholar, a standard- ized testing preparation com- pany, indicates that the vale- dictorian is the student who graduates with the highest cumulative grade point av- erage of his or her class — the average of every year's fi- nal grades. Grades from ad- vanced placement classes are weighted to account for their rigor and extend extra points toward the GPA. Some schools do not immediately award the title to the highest-ranking student. They may ask stu- dents to apply for review and then consider various factors, including grades, level of aca- demic program, essay submis- sion, and even contribution to school and community life. SALUTATORIAN Certain schools may have one salutatorian, while oth- ers may have two or more. The college guidance re- source Transizion says the salutatorian is usually the in- dividual ranked second in the graduating class. A salutatori- an will deliver the salutation, otherwise known as the open- ing speech of the graduation ceremony. The valedictorian speaks later in the program. HIGH-RANKING TERMS In addition to valedictorian and salutatorian, students al- so may become familiar with other terminology, including class rank and "cum laude" recognitions. Class rank refers to a stu- dent's GPA in relation to oth- er students in the same grade. Class rank may be an actual number, such as ranked 30 out of 900 students, or a percent- age like the top 5 percent of the graduating class. Cum laude is a Latin phrase that means "with praise/hon- or." Educational institutions use one of three phrases to signify academic degrees that were awarded with hon- or. The phrases usually are utilized by colleges and uni- versities. Schools have differ- ent criteria that must be met for these honors. Summa cum laude is the highest level of distinction, magna cum laude is next and that is followed by cum laude. It is a great honor to be named valedictorian or sa- lutatorian, and it is an honor worth celebrating at gradua- tion and beyond.
