Poplar Street, Petersburg "This is some weather we've been having." While there is nothing wrong with the "small talk" about trivial things that occupies much of our interaction, based on the Book of Ti- tus, the Apostle Paul would almost certainly encourage us to cultivate conversations about bigger and more important things. Paul told Titus to "speak thou the things which become sound doctrine" (2:1). In oth- er words, Paul wanted this co-worker to con- sciously talk about meaningful things that would ground the saints in truths for today and encourage them to live for the Lord. Paul instructed the "aged men" to act like men of re- al spiritual maturity (2:2). That meant to pur- Billy Graham said, "We can never under- stand hell until we understand the great love, mercy and Grace of God. Hell was not made for man but created for the devil and his an- gels." If we accept the teachings of Jesus, we are forced to accept what He says about judg- ment and hell. It is the very fact of hell that makes the love of God so amazing and so glo- rious. No one needs to go to hell unless they choose to live in disobedience to God. The secular media often writes about hell and the future life. Many preachers seldom, if ever, mention it because it is an unpopular subject. There are many mysteries surround- ing the nature of hell. Hell is separation from God by sin and that continues into eternity. There must be a place of outer darkness some- where because the Bible speaks about it so of- ten. The Bible speaks often of contrast like good and evil, light and darkness, and heaven and hell. It is not God's will that anyone should miss heaven but that we might be saved. Most all major Chris- tian religions teach that hell is a real place. Less is spoken about it in the pulpit today than 100 years ago. Even the Muslims believe in heav- en and hell. I can think of only about three de- nominations that call themselves Christians who do not have a teaching in their core doc- trine regarding a real hell. It is wonderful that God encourages and allows all human beings the opportunity to choose heaven. The Bible speaks of two roads and we choose the one we wish to travel. To understand more about hell, one needs to read the New Testament with an open mind. Religious Viewpoint By Dr. Clyde Dupin See MINUTES on 3 Small Talk Minutes with the Bible By Pastor John Fredericksen Well we have made it through another week and it was not much different than last week. Seems like the same old stuff going on but in a different time so we can only count our bless- ings and be happy with what we have been given. With the grandkids here not much gets done around the house. They are normal kids and are into things often and it takes two of us to keep up with them. I did take the boys mower home and walked home from his house and it seemed like a hundred miles with a sore foot. I mowed our yard and that was about the extent of my accomplishments for one day. The tires on my truck were 16 years old and had almost all their tread, but they were cracked so bad you could have thrown a cat through some of the cracks. They were usable for trash runs, but I was starting to be con- cerned about them. I had a set of new tires I had put in the attic mounted on the truck. It looks good and drives much better so maybe I won't be as concerned about them going down. Last week we were waiting on an event that rarely occurs in this area as we were looking for snow and we got some snow in late April. It is true Indiana weather is extremely change- able and sometimes even disagreeable. Upon getting older I find making lists to help remind me of what needs done. Now if I could only find my list I might get something accomplished. My list last week was not very long but I soon found out there wasn't much on my list which I could get accomplished. Oh well, I'll just take a nap because there is always time for one.
