POWELL Writer/CF Media Want to have some fun all for a great cause? Then an upcom- ing Drive-thru Luminary event at the Dover YMCA may be just for you. According to officials with the Cleveland County YMCA and the American Cancer Society (ACS), on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 6 to 9 p.m., the Cleveland County YMCA, American Cancer Society, and Relay for Life will collaborate to host a drive-thru luminary fundraiser at the Dover YMCA, located at 411 Cherryville Rd., Shelby. Amanda Whitesides, Senior Manager of Community Development for the ACS/ Southeast Region, said this event is "… in lieu of the Relay for Life event that is typically held at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, but will not be held this year due to COVID-19. We will have the Drive-thru Luminaria service option and some onsite activi- ties and entertainment options following social distancing and safety guidelines. It is our top priority to keep everyone safe." So, here's how it works: indi- viduals or groups may purchase a luminary in remembrance of a loved one who passed away from cancer or in remembrance of someone who survived the disease. They will also have sev- eral vendors, outdoor exercise classes, and an Open House for the YMCA LiveStrong Program, if it is safe to do so, according to Whitesides and fellow event plan- ners, Johnny Stamey, Director of Healthy Living, and Mark Pritchett, Executive Director, both of the Dover Foundation YMCA, and Piper Barnes, Director of Annual Giving and Marketing/ Cleveland County Family YMCA. Pritchett and Stamey noted that all activities are COVID con- tingent and all precautions will be taken and social distancing regulations and rules observed. For Relay for Life Cleveland County, Whitesides noted Kathy Collaborators on the May 22, Drive-thru luminary event at the Dover YMCA are Mark Pritchett (Dover Y), Andrea Whitesides (ACS), and Johnny Stamey (Dover Y). Said Whitesides, "Thanks to the continued support from our community here in Cleveland County and the dedication of volunteers, the American Cancer Society is able to help so many – those who are battling cancer today, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis alto- gether by funding groundbreak- ing cancer research, supporting education and prevention efforts, and providing free information and critical services for people with cancer who need them. We can't do it without you and are thankful for your support of American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and all our lifesaving programs and services."
