ON THE TOWN LEFT: The Nantucket Project's chairman Tom Scott shares a selection of locally caught shellfish from the raw bar at Cru with NECN's Jenny Johnson. BELOW: Since it opened last summer, Cru has become one of Nantucket's most elegant and coveted dining spots. MEETING OF MINDS When: A crisp evening on Nantucket. Where: Cru, One Straight Wharf, Nantucket, 508-228-9278; crunantucket.com Time: Sunset. nectar for nantucket A light fog hangs over Nantucket Harbor as I settle into a corner table of Cru restaurant with Tom Scott, one of the longtime islanders responsible for The Nantucket Project, an interactive think tank that brings some of the world's top minds to the resort island every September. Former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev is this year's keynote speaker. Our dining spot of choice, Cru, opened last year, replacing the beloved but rundown Rope Walk with a Meditteraneaninspired menu and a chic, elegant design. It's an apt metaphor for a lot of Nantucket, an island that values history as well as innovation. And Scott has had a huge hand in heralding the latter. He's something of a Renaissance man who made his first fortune as the Juice Guy of Nantucket Nectars. "I was here every day," he says, gesturing out the window of Cru to the water of the harbor. "My office was literally right there." 72 Jenny Johnson: Is that view of the water one of the reasons you love to eat here? Tom Scott: Part of the reason I picked Cru for tonight was because I came to this spot a lot over the years when it was The Rope Walk, but now it's a new thing, its own thing. Oh wow. This is a tower of oysters, crab, and shrimp. You must be a seafood lover. How do you take your oysters? Always on their own; nothing is needed. The seafood on Nantucket is the best in the world, so adding anything takes away the essence. I love seafood. I was a pescatarian for over a decade. And most of this is harvested right from the Sound. Managing partners Jane Stoddard and Carlos Hildago do an amazing job with the raw bar here. They've won some awards. continued on page 74 PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATHAN COE FORMER JUICE GUY TOM SCOTT SITS DOWN AT CRU WITH TV DINER COHOST JENNY JOHNSON TO TALK ABOUT HIS LATEST VENTURE—THE ISLAND'S NEW THINK TANK.
