POWELL Community First Media michael@cfmedia.info On Thursday, March 11, Lacey V. Chambless got to honor the memory of the man who meant the most to her and who has made such an impact in her life – her dad, Bill Chambless. She did so in a unique fashion, by planting a fig tree in his memory at the Boys and Girls Club Shelby location. At the planting event and celebration of his life, which was attended by many who knew and loved Bill and to whom he was a mentor, Lacey said briefly she "…chose a fig tree to be planted here because my Dad and I enjoyed picking figs together most of my life. Hopefully, the kids here at the Boys and Girls Club will enjoy learning about figs and enjoy the fruit. I enjoy figs myself." Lacey noted her Dad was an active board mem- ber and volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club for many years, and she noted she has many fond memories of what he did and what they were able to do together. The late Mr. Chambless, a Realtor, founded Carolinas Commercial Realty in Shelby 19 years ago, according to his friend and fellow broker Ric Francis. He was an Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs as well. "Bill brought me in to work with him," said Francis, who is currently the Vice-President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of C.C., but who will take over the Presidency in June. Mr. Chambless, a Louisiana native, sadly passed away from cancer, noted daughter, Lacey, in March of 2020. Lacey has been a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs, and she added it was a good thing to "… help the kids learn and grow. It felt good to be part of something my Dad was also a part of." She continued, "It makes me happy to have this tree planted in memory of my Dad. I hope when others see this tree, it reminds them of him as well. I know my Dad is above smiling big over all of us now and is very proud. And, he is thankful for everyone's help. Thanks so much to everyone here for being a good friend to my Dad. I know he appreciated everyone's friendship so much." Josh Propst, the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County, said at the tree planting event he met Bill at the Shelby Café, one of his favorite places to eat. Said Josh, "Bill became a men- tor to me. He was a teacher, and not afraid to get his hands dirty." Lacey, who also worked at the B&G Clubs a number of years, added her father met many peo- ple through his business, and was known as a hard-working man. Said Lacey, "Dad also had a strong impact on our community. He served on and was chair of many boards in Cleveland County. It was always a learning experi- ence for me when I went with him to some of his meetings." When Bill ran for County Commissioner several years ago, she said she was with him whenever he was campaigning. "I helped him in any way I could," she said. "His kindness and generosity will be remembered by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him," said Lacey. "One of the most important lessons I learned from him was to keep trying and never give up."
