The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution announced the School and Chapter winners of the Junior American Citizens Contest for 2020-2021. The theme for this year's contest was "The 400th Anniversary of the Mayfl ower- Rise and Shine for New Opportunities in a New Land". Students from third through eighth grades in public, charter, private and homeschooled situations were invited to enter. The students in grades third through fi fth could choose to compete in such contest areas as designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing original poetry, writing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay, or conducting and writing about a community service project that was completed by November 2020. Those students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades could compete in similar areas. The annual contest began in October and ended in early November, with the national part of this contest ending in April of 2021. This year the JAC contest received 278 entries completed by 277 students from elementary and middle school situations. The judges evaluated same type entries at the local school level. Those fi rst-place winners were judged against their peers from other schools. Recently the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter sent, for statewide judging, 15 entries which were completed by 15 students. Again, the chapter submitted excellent entries, which included entries in four of seven categories. Those entries winning fi rst place at the statewide JAC judging level will continue on for judging at the Southeast Division Level. If they win fi rst place there, the entries will go on to National JAC judging in Washington. DAR member Janet D. Jolly said, "We are very proud of all the students who submitted their wonderful entries to us for this year's judging. This year's theme was wonderful, but our schools had a very short period of time to learn about the voyage of the Mayfl ower with the pilgrims that came to the New World in 1620. We are thankful to all those teachers who taught about the importance of those colonists who signed the Mayfl ower Compact, a document which to this day makes up a portion of our rule of law known often as majority rules." Here are the results of the local judging and further down county-wide judging results. First-place winners at the chapter level of judging were sent on to the state judging for 2020-2021.
