It will be an interesting year, but it is nice to have that many guys to build for the future." "I have one player who has played at the varsi- ty level," said Pike Central Head Coach Jarrod Gideon. Last season was cancelled by COVID, so on- ly senior Hunter Traylor has ev- er played at the varsity level. He is the only senior. There are no ju- niors and only one sophomore. But on the bright side, Gideon has nine freshman. Traylor has played for three/four years, depending on whether you count last year or not. "He played number five for us two years ago," said Gideon. "Hunter is a solid player, good all- around. He had a really good atti- tude, a good senor to have with all the young guys. He is going to do things right and lead by example," said Gideon. He also has three guys who have played golf. "I saw Randy Snyder and Tyler Craig, both freshmen, out there playing quite a bit last sum- mer," said Gideon. Sophomore Nolan Nelson was al- so on the course quite a bit, often playing with his grandfather. Gideon said that is a good start for them. "But it is different than just going to play with buddies," said Gideon of actually playing com- petitive golf by the rules. "I have some athletic kids They are trying to absorb everything they can and are trying to get bet- ter already," said Gideon. He said, early on, he is just work- ing on the basics, teaching them rules and how not to waste shots as they go around the course. "So many of them are brand new to the game. "It will be an interesting year, but it is nice to have that many guys to build for the future," said Gideon. A group of nine freshmen and a sophomore will give the Chargers a solid core over the next four years, as young guys who normally wouldn't get the opportunity to play in competition will have two seasons of competition under their belts by the time they are juniors. "I'm just glad to be able to have a season," said Gideon, since last year was cancelled due to COVID.
