PC has great year in voice contest Pike Central had nine gold medal winners and five silvers at the Indiana State School Music Association's State Solo and Ensemble contest recently. Four of the nine gold medal winners had near perfect scores. "It is amazing to have four students with a near-perfect score this year," said Pike Central choir instructor Melissa Traylor. The contest was conducted virtually due to COVID-19. Their individual results are: Reagan Craig–Gold; Alyx Powers–Gold with a near-perfect score; Kimmie Truitt–Silver; Kierstyn Lindley–Gold with a near-perfect score; Addie Faulk–Silver; Tay- lor Oswalt–Silver; Annabella Matteson–Gold; Hannah Woodford–Gold; Gabby Collins–Gold; Shelby Keeker–Gold; Allie Harrison–Silver; Lauren Young–Gold with a near-perfect score; Max Burkhart–Gold with a near-perfect score. "I think the students found out it made them much more nervous to sing for a recording than they thought it would," said Traylor. Eight of the 14 were doing the contest for the first time. "The students worked on these virtually with myself during all of our snow days and recorded them in the days when we returned. I'm very proud of their hard work and determination throughout this year," said Traylor. It will also include new sidewalks and curbs for much of the project. • A preventative maintenance of hot mix asphalt overly on Highway 56 from Highway 61 to Highway 257. • Highway 56/61 drainage correction from McCoy St. to Goodlet St. in Peters- burg. All three projects are slated to be done in the 2021 construction season. Stepping up enforcement around school buses Indiana will be stepping up enforce- ment to protect students going to and from school. Over the next couple of months, officers will be positioned along bus stops and routes watching for stop- arm violations and unsafe driving behav- ior. The overtime patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin- istration through the state's Stop Arm Vi- olation Enforcement (SAVE) program, which was developed by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 2019. "As drivers, we all have a responsibility to make sure students arrive to and from school safely," Gov. Holcomb said. "Ev- eryone needs to do their part by slowing down and watching for buses. As soon as you see those red lights flashing and stop-arm extended, that means stop." More than 200 police agencies will be participating in the spring enforcement campaign, designed to encourage motor- ists to stop for school buses. High-visibil- ity patrols will be conducted in the morn- ing and afternoon along routes identified by local bus drivers and school transpor- tation officials. While officers will be focusing on stop- arm violations, they will also be on the lookout for any unsafe driving behavior, such as speeding and distracted driving. "We still have far too many people speeding and not paying attention to the road," said Devon McDonald, ICJI exec- utive director. "One glance at your phone is all it takes to cause a tragedy. Children are unpredictable, so it's important to stay alert and be prepared to stop at all times." In Indiana, it's against the law for mo- torists to pass a bus that's stopped and has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended. This applies to all roads, with one exception. Motorists who are on a highway that is divided by a barrier, such as a cable barrier, concrete wall or grassy median, are required to stop only if they are traveling in the same direction as the school bus. "Buses in some school districts are re- turning to the roadway for the first time in nearly a year after spring break con- cludes, so it's especially important to stay alert in those areas," said Robert Duck- worth, ICJI traffic safety director. "We all have a role to play when it comes to school bus safety."
