Maryssa Dysart of Mooresboro is a recipient of a personalized quilt from the nonprofi t group Quilts of Hope. She is the daughter of Jeremy and Tonya Dysart. The quilt was delivered to the Dysart home Saturday by Jaime Smitte, owner/creator of the Quilts of Hope. Smitte and her mom drove to Rutherford County from Florida to hand deliver the quilt to Maryssa. Quilts Of Hope makes personalized quilts for children with serious or chronic illnesses and children can apply for a quilt and get on a waiting list. Maryssa chose the Harry Potter theme for her quilt when the family applied about two years ago. The quilts consist of a theme of the quilt recipients choosing and messages to the quilt recipient emailed to me by friends and family. "We are so excited to have received such an awesome and meaningful gift," said Tonya Dysart, "It has quotes from lots of friends and family members with words of encouragement and love." Maryssa was diagnosed on December 4, 2017 with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 9 years old, she's 12 now. During her fi rst year of treatment she spent over 100 days in the hospital. She developed blood clots on two separate occasions as a side effect to one of her chemos. Due to this she had to be on blood thinner injections twice a day for around 11 months. Thankfully the clots are gone along with a lot of the other problems that developed during early treatment. She is in remission and completed treatment and chemotherapy in April 2020. Since fi nishing treatment she has been in physical therapy to regain her strength that she lost. She is doing great and making lots of improvement. She was recently in the hospital for tests but is back home and doing well, her mother said. The Quilts Of Hope organization is located in Seminole, Florida. The quilts are free and personalized and consist of a theme picked out by the recipient of the quilt. Quilts Of Hope was begun by Smitte in 2004.
