43 Susan Garcia used to work across the street from Vivalon, and knew that one day she wanted to volunteer there. She studied geriatrics in college, and has always been very interested in aging. "I'm fascinated by how the body and mind work as we get older," she says. Susan retired three years ago, and realized, "Being at home isn't where I wanted to be all the time." She wanted to find a way to give back to the community. So, she began volunteering at Vivalon, and never looked back. Working at the front desk came naturally to Susan, so that's where she started. "What I love most is seeing people connect," Susan shares. She describes Vivalon as being "like a family" for members. "They've made such a warm place for people to gather," she adds. Susan is not just a volunteer at Vivalon — she is also an active member, who currently benefits from Vivalon's Spanish and writing classes. She also likes playing virtual Bingo with other members. Susan says she also plans to bring her 30-year teaching career to Vivalon. She says she has some creative ideas in mind and adds, "I want to find a class that will be really fun for everyone." A Sunday school teacher for kindergarteners, she understands that there may be a learning curve with online teaching, but she is up for the challenge. As someone who used to envision herself volunteering at Vivalon, Susan is so happy that now she is.
