By Jay Bobbin If you're playing a heroine endur- ing plenty of troubles, it's fitting to be pitted against daytime-drama icons whose characters have had their own problems. Two such actresses — "The Young and the Restless" staple Lauralee Bell and Kristian Alfonso, who ended her long "Days of Our Lives" tenure last year — have prominent roles in Life- time's latest movies based on bestsellers by V.C. Andrews about several genera- tions of multiple families. The four new films will run over two consecutive weekends, forming a virtual miniseries. In "Ruby" (Saturday, March 20) and "Pearl in the Mist" (Sunday, March 21) Louisiana-bayou-bred Ruby Landry (played by Raechelle Banno, whose twin sister Karina Banno portrays Ruby's hateful sibling) faces off against her stern stepmother Daphne (Bell) while forcibly separated from her high school sweetheart Paul (Sam Duke). The last two stories, "All That Glitters" (Saturday, March 27) and "Hidden Jewel" (Sunday, March 28), feature Alfonso as Paul's domineering mother Gladys ... who threatens to use a secret against Ruby just as the latter thinks she's finally found happiness. Now recurring as lawyer Christine Blair on CBS' "The Young and the Restless" (created by her parents) after starting on it in 1983, Bell admits she wasn't fully familiar with novelist An - drews, but she quickly discovered how many others were: "When people asked why I was leaving town and which project I was for," she says, "as soon as I mentioned (Andrews' book) 'Flowers in the Attic,' everyone was like, 'Oh, yes! Of course!' "Since I grew up in a television fami - ly, we were always watching television," Bell notes, "I had the book, but I was just not a great reader." Once Bell be - came familiar with Andrews' Daphne, she immediately embraced the part: "She's so different from anyone else I've played. Once you see her high hairdo and the clothes, you get a sense of what this woman is about." Similarly, in the first job she did after leaving her iconic NBC "Days of Our Lives" role as Hope Brady, Alfonso found plenty to appreciate about her Andrews character. Affirm - ing "it's a complete departure" for her, she deems Gladys "really interest- ing and complex, and I thought it could be so much fun. I felt like I was part of a family from the mo- ment I stepped on the set." Since Lifetime's initial Andrews-based movies have repeated successfully, the new group also is likely to have many more showings in years to come. Though she had to quarantine for two weeks before she could film in Canada, Alfonso liked having so much prep time. "They put all my scenes together, so I shot for four full days. It went by so fast, because I was so busy." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop Soap-opera veterans help fuel Life- time's latest V.C. Andrews movies Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie It may have driven down bluefin tuna prices and incomes drastically, but Dave Carraro says the pandemic has also had a positive effect on the boat captains of "Wicked Tuna," in that it's forged a spirit of cooperation. "It did change the dynamic of how we worked or did not work together," Carraro, captain of the FV-Tuna.com, says. "We all agreed that, 'Hey, let's work together.' Yeah, everybody was still competitive or everybody still wanted to be that top boat but we all helped one another out with regards to where we were fishing. 'Hey, you go this way, I'll go that way.' And you know, we shared information and we shared tactics, you know, how we were fishing, baits we were fishing, how deep we were fishing, just to help one another along for the season for a common goal. And that's to catch and make Checking in with Dave Carraro what money we can considering the circumstances." Indeed, Season 10 of the Sunday National Geographic unscripted series finds the boat captains of Gloucester, Mass., scrapping to get by. Restaurants are shut down or at very limited capacity and thus demand for bluefin tuna is down, which means so are prices that captains are getting. Furthermore, commercial fishermen are allowed to fish only three days a week, so if they catch nothing in those three days, they have to wait another week to fish — for tuna at rock-bottom prices. As a result, Carraro had to be more cost-conscious, doing things like fishing closer to shore and traveling slower to burn less fuel. And he's ex - pecting more of the same conditions this summer, though maybe not to same degree as a year ago. "We're hoping more restaurants are open," he says, "we're hoping that people start to slide back into their normal routine going out to eat. And hopefully restaurants can have not zero capacity or just 25 percent capacity but they can have 50 or maybe even 100 percent capacity as things improve and there's going to be more of a demand for bluefin. And hopefully we'll be able to fish daily as opposed to last year." Name: David Carraro Birth date: April 23, 1965 Birthplace: Staten Island, N.Y. Raised in: Monmouth County, N.J.
