Brainerd Dispatch • February 14 - 20, 2021 •19 By Dana Simpson TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Behind Her Eyes" Step into a world of psychological torment and twisted relationship dynamics with the new Netflix thriller "Behind Her Eyes," joining the streamer's lineup on Wednes- day, Feb. 17. Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by English author Sarah Pinborough, "Behind Her Eyes" follows Louise (Simona Brown, "The Little Drummer Girl"), a single mother who is holding down a job in a psychiatrist's office to provide for her son and begins an affair with her married boss, David (Tom Bateman, "Murder on the Ori- ent Express," 2017), shortly there- after. Meanwhile, Louise and Adele (Eve Hewson, "Bridge of Spies," 2015), David's wife, begin some- what of an unlikely friendship of their own, unknown to David. What follows is a game of secrets, distrust and suspense driven by Adele's cold and removed eeriness and the over- arching feeling that something is just not quite right. Filmed between June and October 2019 in London and parts of Scotland, the six-part miniseries developed by "Narcos" and "Hannibal" producer Steve Lightfoot has been a long-awaited project for many fans of the bestselling book. Directed by Nor- wegian writer/director Erik Richter Strand ("Valkyrien"), "Behind Her Eyes" also stars Tyler Howitt ("His Dark Materials"), Aston McAuley ("Rocketman," 2019) and Robert Aramayo ("Game of Thrones"). "Tribes of Europa" Take up sides or band together, but either way be prepared for the battle of a lifetime as the new Net- flix miniseries "Tribes of Europa" premieres Friday, Feb. 19, on the streamer. Following the popular- ity of the German science-fiction series "Dark," which ran from 2017 until June of last year, Netflix set a series order for five more German- language series. "Tribes of Europa" is one of these five such series, and it centers on siblings Liv (Henriette Confurius, "Line of Separation"), Elja (David Ali Rashed, "Tiger Milk," 2017) and Kiano (Emilio Sakarya, "4 Blocks") as they embark on an adventure to change the course of Europe's future following a mysteri- ous and deadly global attack that left the continent in a shamble of fractured micro-states all vying for power and supremacy in the 2070s. With each of Europe's "tribes" fighting for leadership, a question mark hangs over a mysterious cube that could spell either success or disaster for those who possess it. Created by Philip Koch ("Outside the Box," 2015) and directed by Koch and Florian Baxmeyer ("Tatort"), "Tribes of Europa" also stars Oliver Masucci ("Look Who's Back," 2015), Melika Foroutan ("Pari," 2020) and Alain Blazevic ("Forbidden Love") and features an original series score by Canadian composer Clinton Shorter ("District 9," 2009). "I Care A Lot" (2020) Don't get caught in the middle of the predator-versus-prey battle in Netflix's new film "I Care A Lot," joining the roster on Friday, Feb. 19. Academy Award nominee Ro- samund Pike ("Gone Girl," 2014) stars as Marla Grayson, a cool and seemingly caring court-appointed guardian to elderly charges who are deemed unable to continue taking proper care of themselves. Acquiring the assets and funds of many of her clients over the years, Marla and her partner (in every sense of the word), Fran (Eiza González, "Baby Driver," 2017), now have their sights set on Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest, "Edward Scissorhands," 1990), a wealthy aging retiree with no living descendants or family. What Marla and Fran don't know, however, is that despite having no family of her own, Jennifer has still managed to amass some pretty powerful con- nections over the years, forcing the two young con artists to rethink their original game plan. Written and directed by J Blakeson ("The Disappearance of Alice Creed," 2009), the ironically titled "I Care A Lot" also stars Peter Dinklage ("Game of Thrones"), Isiah Whit- lock Jr. ("BlacKkKlansman," 2018), Chris Messina ("Argo," 2012) and Macon Blair ("The Hunt," 2020). WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Flora & Ulysses" (2021) Get super squirrelly with the ador- able new family film "Flora & Ulysses," premiering on Disney+ on Friday, Feb. 19. Dishing out magic as only Disney can, the production company is now bringing Kate DiCamillo's — author of "The Tale of Despereaux" — 2014 Newbery Award-winning book, "Flora & Ulysses," to life for film lovers. Flora (Matilda Lawler, "The Block Island Sound," 2020) is a cynical child with a habit of devouring comic books. She loves the concept of superheroes — those often-caped crusaders who save the day when trouble is afoot — but jaded by her parents' recent decision to divorce and her naturally born cynicism, Flora acknowledges that they only exist between the pages of her favorite stories. Enter Ulysses: a squirrel she rescued and looked af- ter only to realize that he possesses superpowers capable of changing Flora's world and outlook on life forever. Adapted for the screen by Brad Copeland ("Ferdinand," 2017) and directed by "The Tiger Hunter's" (2016) Lena Khan, "Flora & Ulysses" stars Alyson Hanni- gan ("How I Met Your Mother") as Flora's mother, Phyllis; Ben Schwartz ("Sonic the Hedgehog," 2020) as her father, George; and a unique cast of supporting charac- ters played by Danny Pudi ("Com- munity"), Bobby Moynihan ("We Bare Bears") and Kate Minucci ("Unikitty!"), to name a few. "The Muppet Show" Release your inner Animal (or Gon- zo, or Kermit, or Fozzy …) on Friday, Feb. 19, when all five seasons of the 1970s classic "The Muppet Show" come to Disney+. Once again, "It's time to raise the curtain" and, yes, get that song stuck in your head each time the Jim Henson ("Sesame Street") and Jack Burns ("Fridays") classic kicks off an epi- sode of the show. Originally on the air for a total of 120 half-hour epi- sodes between 1976 and 1981, the quirky comedic puppets welcomed a plethora of special guests to the variety show, including none other than music icon Sir Elton John, master of horror Vincent Price ("Ed- ward Scissorhands," 1990), French national treasure and entertainer Charles Aznavour ("Le Chinois"), beloved songstress Julie Andrews ("The Sound of Music," 1965) and funny man John Cleese ("Monty Python and the Holy Grail," 1975), to name a few. Featuring recurring sketches such as "At the Dance," "An Editorial by Sam the Eagle," "Gonzo's Stunts" and others, voice actors and puppeteers Frank Oz ("Muppets Tonight"), Dave Goelz ("Fraggle Rock"), Richard Hunt ("The Muppet Movie," 1979) and Henson himself showcase their talents in each and every episode of the series directed by Peter Harris ("Spitting Image") and Philip Cas- son ("EastEnders"). "The Book of Life" (2014) Travel between worlds and find your true destiny with the colorful and inspirational story of "The Book of Life," coming to Disney+ on Friday, Feb. 19. Before the 2017 Disney/Pixar sensation "Coco" hit the big screen, this fun-loving animated imagining of the Day of the Dead festivities, traditions and beliefs in Mexico captivated its viewers, young and old alike. Fol- lowing the young Manolo (Diego Luna, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," 2016), who is struggling with whether to follow in the clear- cut footsteps of his family's values or give in to those within his own heart, "The Book of Life" takes its viewers on a magical adventure across three worlds as Manolo learns how to strike a healthy bal- ance between the past, present and future. Directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez ("El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera") and written by Gutierrez and Primetime Emmy nominee Doug Langdale ("Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness"), this beautifully animated family film features the voices of Zoe Sal- dana ("Guardians of the Galaxy," 2014), Channing Tatum ("21 Jump Street," 2012), Ron Perlman ("Hell- boy," 2004), Christina Applegate ("Dead to Me"), Ice Cube ("Are We There Yet?," 2005), Danny Trejo ("Spy Kids," 2001), Hector Elizondo ("The Princess Diaries," 2001) and Kate del Castillo ("La Reina del Sur"). Two-time Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro ("Pan's Laby- rinth," 2006) serves on the board of producers. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Nomadland" (2020) Take this time during the pandemic to reflect on what life means to you and learn about the other ways people are living in America as "No- madland" comes to Hulu on Friday, Feb. 19. Starring two-time Academy Award winner Frances McDormand ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," 2017) as Fern, a rural Nevada woman who lost her job, her house and her husband during the Great Recession and decided to get a new lease on life as a no- mad. Packing her bags into a van and setting out across the country, Fern accepts whatever work she can find, earning funds to support herself and her nomadic life before moving on to the next town and a new job. Based on Jessica Bruder's acclaimed 2017 non-fiction book, "Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century," this visually stunning film explores the economics, physical struggles and emotional whiplash of living a nomadic lifestyle in today's day and age. Also featuring real-life nomads Linda May, Charlene Swankie and Bob Wells ("Without Bound — Perspectives on Mobile Living," 2014) as fictionalized versions of themselves, "Nomadland" was written, directed, co-produced and edited by award-winning Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao ("The Rider," 2017). Eve Hewson stars in "Behind Her Eyes" Matilda Lawler as seen in "Flora & Ulysses" Frances McDormand in "Nomadland"
