Brainerd Dispatch • January 17 - 23, 2021 •19 By Dana Simpson TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The White Tiger" (2021) Watch as the transformation of a lifetime takes place in "The White Tiger," a new film com - ing to Netflix on Friday, Jan. 22. Based on Indian author Aravind Adiga's bestselling debut novel of the same name from 2008, "The White Tiger" follows Bal- ram (Adarsh Gourav, "Die Try- ing"), a young man working as a driver for a wealthy couple who has just returned to India from the United States. Brought up his entire life to desire nothing other than the "highest honor of being a servant to a rich mas - ter" — as most young children in his village were — Balram works tirelessly to make himself indispensable to his masters, Ashok (Rajkummar Rao, "New- ton," 2017) and Pinky (Priyanka Chopra Jonas, "Quantico"), in the hopes of getting a promo- tion from driver to servant. Truly steadfast in trying to attain his goal, it isn't until Pinky ques- tions his truest desires that Balram realizes he wants more for himself than what he has been taught to want all his life. Awakening an unstoppable force within him, Balram narrates the story of his rise from lowly driver to successful entrepreneur, with no shortage of corruption, deceit and struggle along the way. Adapted for the screen and directed by "Fahrenheit 451" (2018) producer Ramin Bahrani, this rags-to-riches tale also stars Perrie Kaperanos ("Yeh Ballet," 2020), Nalneesh Neel ("Bhor: Dawn," 2018) and up-an-coming child actor Vedant Sinha ("The Family Man," 2019). WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Losing Alice" Lose yourself in the drama of Apple's newly acquired Israeli series, "Losing Alice," coming to Apple TV+ on Friday, Jan. 22. Having originally aired on Is- rael's Hot TV network, the series was a hit that later saw action on the We Are One: A Global Film Festival circuit and as a part of the Cannes Series Lineup. The eight-episode series follows successful female film director Alice (Ayelet Zurer, "Angels & Demons," 2009) as she embarks on a Faustian journey of desire, bargaining and risk after meet- ing an enchanting, much young- er femme-fatale screenwriter named Sophie (Lihi Kornowski, "The Hood"). Described by the Cannes Series trailer as "a visual cinematic journey" and a "psy- chological neo-noir," "Losing Al- ice" will premiere the first three episodes on the streamer, fol- lowed by weekly releases of the remaining five each subsequent Friday. From writer/producer Si- gal Avin ("The Champion"), the series explores themes of desire, rage, jealousy, power, knowl- edge, morality, fear of aging and others through a series of "flash- backs and flash forwards in a satisfyingly complex narrative that takes the viewer through the conscious and subconscious of its protagonist's mind" (per Avin). Also starring Gal Toren ("Up the Wrong Tree," 2013), Yossi Marshek ("You Don't Mess with the Zohan," 2008), Chelli Goldenberg ("Out in the Dark," 2012) and Shai Avivi ("Hat- suya") in recurring roles, "Losing Alice" is a truly unsettling thriller masterpiece. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "The Sister" Brace yourself for mystery as a little piece of the United King- dom joins the Hulu roster with the arrival of "The Sister" on Friday, Jan. 22. Created and writ- ten by twice Primetime Emmy- nominated writer/producer Neil Cross ("Luther") and based upon his popular 2009 novel "Burial," "Sisters" explores what happens when ordinary people try to keep a dark piece of their history hid- den. Arranged as a four-episode miniseries, the thriller centers on Nathan (Russell Tovey, "Be- ing Human"), a young man who is rocked by the reappearance of Bob (Bertie Carvel, "Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned"), the only other person on the planet who is privy to the details of his deepest, darkest secret; a secret both Nathan and Bob have man- aged to keep under wraps … until now. With Bob threatening to unravel everything Nathan has worked so hard to achieve, the pressure mounts as charac- ters and viewers alike are forced to ask themselves the question, "How far would you go to keep your darkest secret?" Originally commissioned for ITV in the U.K. under the name "Because the Night," "The Sister" stars Amrita Acharia ("Game of Thrones") as Nathan's wife, Holly; Nina Toussaint-White ("EastEnders") as police detective and friend of Holly, Jacki; and Simone Ashley ("Sex Education") as Holly's missing sister, Elise. The miniseries was directed by Niall MacCormick ("The Victim") and is executive produced by "Dublin Murders" producers Kate Har- wood and Noemi Spanos. "Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself" (2020) Tap into the true nature of the self when "Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself," comes to Hulu on Friday, Jan. 22. What seems like a simple enough question is one that has no doubt had us all near the edge of an existential crisis at least once in our lives: who am I really? DelGaudio, known to many as a "conceptual magician" or an illusionist, is now attempting to unpack that question by shedding light on the illusive nature of identity and what it is that makes each of us who we are. A stage production in its original form, "In & Of It- self" was filmed live from a small New York City theater venue and is produced in its film format by actor/puppeteer/filmmaker Frank Oz ("Sesame Street"). Intention- ally vague in its description, "In & Of Itself" encourages the audi- ence to look inside themselves as they watch DelGaudio per- form the sleight-of-hand tricks for which he earned his fame. Described by executive producer Stephen Colbert ("The Late Show with Stephen Colbert") as a "beautiful and mysterious film" — Colbert and his wife, Ev- elyn McGee Colbert ("Strangers with Candy," 2005), both serve on a team of executive producers — "In & Of Itself" certainly aims to offer more than the standard, run-of-the-mill onstage magic show. Featuring music by "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) composer Mark Mothersbaugh and Dave Harrington ("The Bad Batch," 2016), "Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself" runs the length of a feature film and is sure to inject a touch of magic into your life as you contemplate the barriers and details of your identity. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "3 Caminos" Go on a collection of journeys that are at once physical and emotional when "3 Caminos" comes to Prime on Friday, Jan. 22. Spanning three trips, 21 years and five lives, "3 Caminos" follows a group of friends as they hike the Camino Trail in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on three separate occasions dur- ing different stages of their lives. The series begins when they are in their 20s, the first season ending when they are each in their 40s. Over the years, the tale follows Jana (Anna Schimrigk, "The Aftermath," 2019), a young German woman, as her rage to- wards the establishment begins to fade and she grows into a sympathetic and well-rounded adult; Roberto (Álex González, "X-Men: First Class," 2011), a young man from Mexico, as he grapples with his inner demons and works to forgive himself for an accident that occurred sev- eral years before; Luca (Andrea Bosca, "The Red Door"), an Ital- ian, who struggles to keep his head above water in the wake of the pressures of his day-to- day life; and Korean/Spanish couple Yoon Soo (Alberto Jo Lee, "Polònia") and Raquel (Verónica Echegui, "Apaches"), who try to balance romance and friendship as they work on their music. Every trip they take down the Camino Trail reveals something new to each of them, the trail itself mirroring the journey each of them has taken to get where they are in life. Filmed in the Navarre region of Spain — view- ers may recognize it as the dry, desert-like home of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke, "Last Christmas," 2020) in the fantasy series "Game of Thrones") — "3 Caminos" features six episodes that are expected to be released all at once on the streamer. Di- rected by Norberto Lopez Amado ("How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster?" 2010), Frank Meletzky ("Forwards Ever!" 2017) and Iñaki Mercero ("The Time in Between"), the series also stars Cecilia Suárez ("The House of Flowers"), João Reis ("Terra Brava") and Maria João Falcão ("Terra Nova") in sup- porting roles. Adarsh Gourav and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as seen in "The White Tiger" Ayelet Zurer in "Losing Alice" Bertie Carvel, Russell Tovey, Amrita Acharia and Nina Toussaint-White star in "The Sister" www.SEWERSKEWER.Com FREE SHIPPING- PROMO CODE XL-15
