The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, January 8, 2021 20 By Dana Simpson TV Media Heroes assemble: It shouldn't come as a shock that people love a good awards show — there is a whole sea- son devoted to it, after all. What is rather shocking, how- ever, is that, until now, there has never been one such show dedicated to the plethora of superhero-themed films and television series. But now, thanks to the Critics Choice As- sociation (CCA), the first annu- al Critics Choice Super Awards are set to air Sunday, Jan. 10, on CW. As its name signifies, the "Super Awards" will focus largely on all aspects of super- hero film and television, in- cluding awards categories such as Best Villain in a Movie, Best Superhero Movie and Best Actor/Actress in a Super- hero Series. What the show's name does not immediately make clear, however, is the at- tention also paid to the Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, Action and Animation genres — many of which often play a role in superhero content as well. With a total of 32 awards to dole out between film and TV, hosts Kevin Smith ("Clerks," 1994) and Dani Fernandez ("Best of Battlecam") will have their hands full. The inau- gural year is seeing a whop- ping 35 nominations for Netflix originals, five for Hulu's Andy Samberg and Christina Milioti- led fantasy/comedy film, "Palm Springs" (2020), and six for Mi- sha Green's sci-fi/horror series, "Lovecraft Country." Also up for some serious acclaim this year is the Star Trek franchise. Patrick Stewart ("Stark Trek: Picard") and Sonequa Martin- Green ("Star Trek: Discovery") will be accepting the Legacy Award — the "Super Awards'" version of a Lifetime Achieve- ment Award — on behalf of the iconic franchise's many ac- complishments over the past 55 years. Excited for the CCA's deci- sion to launch the "Super Awards" during the pandemic, Joey Berlin, the organization's CEO, said, "We've been devel- oping this for two years, and from Day 1 we always thought it would be a virtual show," something which, no doubt, helps matters during the cur- rent health crisis. realtalk Dani Fernandez hosts the Critics Choice Super Awards B/The Pine Shoppe 6x7.5
