"The Belly of an Architect" (1987): Brian Dennehy always was a true force on a stage or in front of a camera, and writer-director Peter Greenaway's portrait of an architect on the verge of personal collapse stands as a perfect example. "The Square Peg" (1958): Honor Blackman would be better- remembered for television's "The Avengers" and then "Goldfinger," but she had a showcase role earlier as Norman Wisdom's leading lady in this comedy about a mishap-prone repairman. By Jay Bobbin Every year involves saying final farewells to some screen greats, and the circumstances of 2020 have made many recent losses seem that much bigger. Turner Classic Movies traditionally honors such talents each December, not only with a memorial featurette that plays frequently between the month's feature attractions, but also with an "In Memoriam" event that offers films of some of the artists who passed during the preceding year. This time, that TCM tribute starts on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 29, and continues into the channel's daytime lineup on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Here's a look at several of the included movies and the individuals TCM intends to salute by showing them. "The Graduate" (1967): The honoree here is Buck Henry, who co-wrote the script (from the novel by Charles Webb, who died this year, too) and also has a wry role as a hotel desk clerk. Director Mike Nichols' popular, enduring movie ostensibly is a comedy — and it does have its hilarious moments — but it also has darker themes as re - cent college grad Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) is seduced by wily family friend Mrs. Robinson (Anne Ban- croft), then pursues her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962): The wonderful Shirley Knight had a long career as a noted character actress, and she had one of her best roles as the well-named Heavenly Finley in this filmed version of Tennessee Wil- liams' play. "This Is Spinal Tap" (1984): In a literal use of the phrase "I'm with the band," Fred Willard lent his typi- cally distinctive comedic presence to director Rob Reiner's celebrated music-world satire as an Air Force lieutenant who's party to an eventful CroSSWord Solution Puzzle on Page 17 Sudoku Solution Puzzle on Page 25 filled by client "Evil Under the Sun" (1982): Another "The Avengers" and James Bond-movie veteran, Diana Rigg, was among the "suspects" investigat - ed by Peter Ustinov's Hercule Poirot in this Agatha Christie murder mystery (directed, as it happens, by "Goldfinger's" Guy Hamilton). "The China Syndrome" (1979): One of Wilford Brimley's earliest movie performances has remained one of his most memorable, as a nuclear-plant co-worker of an en - gineer (Jack Lemmon) determined to expose the threat he believes the plant poses. Brimley's big scene comes at the very end, but the wait is worth it. Editor's Pick TCM pays its 2020 'In Memoriam' tribute to late talents The late Diana Rigg is among the stars of "Evil Under the Sun" Wednesday on Turner Classic Movies.
