In business downtown El cortez carves out a spot on list of historic places By Joe Schoenmann staff writer One of downtown Las Vegas' oldest residents, the El Cortez, was honored this month for winning a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Councilman Bob Coffin unveiled a commemorative plaque at the hotel-. The city's oldest hotel to continuously operate under the same name, the El Cortez became only the second Las Vegas casino on the nation's cultural preservation list in February. The Moulin Rouge, the city's first integrated casino that burned down in 2003, is the other. The National Register says this about the El Cortez: "When the El Cortez Hotel and Casino opened in 1941, it became the largest and most fashionable hotel/casino on Fremont Street in Las Vegas and would remain so for the next decade. The dream of Los Angeles contractor Marion Hicks and business partner John Grayson, the 59-room El Cortez Hotel, built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, was bigger than the Fremont Street clubs and located in the heart of the city." The El Cortez is one of the oldest existing businesses on Fremont Street, which has also made it something of an anomaly on a street growing with new businesses and younger residents. real estate shopping center sells for more than $50 million EvErything wE havE. The $50.5 million deal was recorded with Clark County on May 3 and announced by the brokerage firm Lucescu Realty, which represented Regency. The 512,325-square-foot retail hub on North Fifth Street near the 215 Beltway has several big-box tenants, including Target, The Home Depot, Toys 'R' Us, Ross Dress for Less and Staples. Target, however, owns its 143,160square-foot store, which was not included in the sale. Cancer strikes more than your body. The Senate-Assembly budget subcommittee rejected the recommendation of Gov. Brian Sandoval to spend up to $60,000 in each of the next two years to work with private companies to install toll stations on some of the major roads. The department argued that solo drivers would be able to achieve greater speeds instead of traveling in more congested general highway lanes. HOT lanes are used in other western regions, such as Salt Lake City, San Diego, Denver and Orange County, Calif. | 2 7 M AY 2 0 1 3 20130527_VI09_F.indd 9 C om pr e h e ns i v e | Hundreds of thousands of patients have come to Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada for treatment over the years, which means we've had hundreds of thousands of opportunities to learn what cancer can do to the lives of our patients and their families.
