Send your business-philanthropy information to news@vegasinc.com PODS Las Vegas helped collect more than 200 communitycare package items for the troops of Nellis Air Force Base, many of whom will be deployed overseas this fall, at the Adopt a Serviceman event. The pilots at Sky Combat Ace donated a thrill ride to a sick teen. Kiran Kanhai, 16, of New York, traveled here with his family as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation program. The stunt pilots took him on a flight about 3,000 feet above the desert and at speeds up to 250 mph. Toyota Financial Services partnered with three auto, remarketing firms – ADESA, Manheim and Norwalk Auto Auctions – to provide a donation of $24,443 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas. This is part of a larger contribution of $464,425 from Toyota to Boys & Girls Clubs of America that will be divided equally among 19 local Boys & Girls Clubs running Diplomas to Degrees, the organization's college readiness program. United Health Foundation donated $500,000 to United Network for Organ Sharing to integrate UNOS's kidney paired donation matching service into the national transplant system's technology infrastructure. Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and William Anderson, vice president of best practices for the National Notary Association, presented a $1,000 check to Dr. Joanne Goodwin, director of Women's Research Institute of Nevada at UNLV to support civic engagement programming for college students. This may include one-day workshops, speakers or tuition for a national leadership conference for a competitive alumnae of National Education for Women's Leadership. The Home Depot Foundation donated a truckload of mattresses, valued at more than $97,000, and approximately 3,500 square yards of carpet, valued at nearly $100,000, to Veterans Village Las Vegas. The foundation, which has been actively engaged in supporting Veterans Village since its inception last year, also recently awarded Veterans Village with a $600,000 grant – the largest grant to a single project and the largest grant in THDF's western division. David Cabrera, a manager at the Home Depot at Eastern and Serene avenues, and Terry Murphy, a longtime local businesswoman and community leader who is president of Strategic Solutions and serves as president of Downtown Las Vegas Alliance, were named SHARE Humanitarians for the months of April and May. As part of a $50,000 donation to Clark County READS, Generation Vegas provided new books for the Mabel Hoggard Magnet School library. Generation Vegas was founded in 2012 by a dedicated group of local business owners who are committed to making Las Vegas a better place for future generations by promoting education, community and leadership. Project 150, a local organization dedicated to helping homeless, displaced and disadvantaged students at 15 high schools in Southern Nevada, raised $2,000 from a fundraiser at a Las Vegas Wranglers hockey game. The Wranglers donate a portion of the group's ticket sales, as well as a percentage of sales from that night's Chuck-A-Puck fundraising program, back to the organization. The Southwest Gas employee charitable giving campaign, Fuel For Life, donated $64,159.08 to Catholic Charities. The award will be used to fund various social services programs that assist Las Vegans in need. Tronox held a company blood drive at its Henderson plant to benefit the United Blood Services. Between employees, friends and family members, 20 pints of blood were donated. During the first quarter of 2013, the NV Energy Foundation contributed $389,000, including multi-year commitments, to nonprofit organizations statewide. Grants were given to Southern Nevada organizations including the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, United Way of Southern Nevada, College of Southern Nevada Foundation, Cultural Diversity Foundation, Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada and the Assistance League of Las Vegas. Northern Nevada organizations that received grants include DRI GreenPower Program, American Red Cross-Northern Nevada Chapter, Nevada Museum of Art, Imlay Safe Haven Rescue Zoo, Winnemucca Senior Center, Tahoe Rim Trail and Virginia City Community Chest. The Pregnancy Foundation of Las Vegas raised more than $220,000 at its second annual "Hope is Born." Guests participated in both silent and live auctions while enjoying food, drinks and entertainment. The Pregnancy Foundation of Las Vegas was founded in 2011 by Tom and Vanessa Breitling, with a mission to improve pregnancy outcomes by preventing pre-term births. Three Square Food Bank recently received $16,926 from Bank of America's 2012 Give A Meal Campaign. The funds were collected during the holiday season through the corporate office of Bank of America as well as the local Las Vegas area branches. Colton Bennion, a Bonanza High School senior, organized a No Limits Sports Gear Drive for an Eagle Scout Project to benefit Project 150. More than 200 pairs of shoes were donated to students at Western High School as a result of his efforts. Henderson Little League received a boost from Dollar Loan Center for its 2013 season when Chuck Brennan, the company's CEO, made his third annual contribution to the league with a check for $10,000 and a commitment to support the organization for the next five years. Tronox, along with 10 community partners, donated gift cards and construction tools to the UNLV Solar Decathlon Team. Tools will be used for the construction of the DesertSol Project, a prototype house being built by students and entered into the international 2013 Solar Decathlon Competition. The house will be designed and constructed to take advantage of the Mojave Desert's renewable resources to produce a sustainable home that is self-reliant in the desert. Members of the Las Vegas Corvettes Association, along with several members of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, purchased 130 tickets to a Las Vegas Wranglers hockey game, resulting in a donation of $1,000 to Henry's Place Foundation. Henry's Place was founded after the death of Metro Sgt. Henry Prendes, who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call in 2006. Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada explored the many facets of careers in the construction industry during Ms. Fix It Herself, a collaboration with National Association of Women in Construction, NV Energy, Par-3, HERServices Inc. and Sisters in the Brotherhood Carpenters Union. The Bennett Family Foundation and the Engelstad Family Foundation, both mutually invested in ending childhood hunger, have pledged $1 million toward Three Square Food Bank. Every dollar raised is specifically designated as matching funds, calling on corporations, foundations and individuals to come together to meet the full amount. Village Square held its inaugural Arts & Eats that featured art from 20 original artists, live musical performances and a tasting menu from eight participating Village Square restaurants. The benefit raised $1,500 for Three Square Food Bank. The Engelstad Family Foundation announced a three-year commitment to Communities In Schools of Nevada for a total donation of $1 million. Communities In Schools of Nevada is the local affiliate of the nation's leading dropout prevention organization and Nevada's most effective intervention program. CIS of Nevada supports nearly 25,000 students over 40 school sites in Southern Nevada and Northeastern Nevada. This funding will give CISN the capability to expand its services to five additional schools in Nevada. The Vegas Valley Mustangs raised more than $3,000 for Catholic Charities' Social Services programs at a car show at the Henderson Heritage Parade and Festival commemorating the City of Henderson's 60th Anniversary. Nevada Blind Children's Foundation received a $1,000 dona tion from the Riviera Employee Foundation. Funds from this donation will support the educational programs and services offered to blind and visually impaired children in the Las Vegas community. Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada received a $2.25 million dollar grant from the Engelstad Family Foundation.
