The Chesterton Tribune will cease publication of its print news- paper after 136 years, putting out its last print edition Dec. 30. Based in downtown Chesterton, the publication that billed itself as the "Duneland's hometown newspaper since 1884" was the longest continuously operating newspaper in Northwest Indiana. "This was not an easy decision to make, and the publishers deeply regret that this step is necessary," the Chesterton Tribune announced on its website. "A variety of fac- tors led to the decision, including the decline in hands-on print pub- lications and the economic impact of the nation's failure to curb COVID-19. Until that time, this newspaper will cover local news as if there was no tomorrow." Published as both a weekly and daily newspaper over the years, it may continue as an online publication. "The future of the Tribune website, chestertontribune.com, is under discussion," the newspaper posted. — The Chesterton Tribun IndyStar will soon add a reporter to its ranks dedicated to covering inequity thanks to a new partnership with Report for America. Launched in 2017, Report for America is a service program that places emerging and experienced journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered topics and communities. In Indianapolis, this journalist will expand our coverage within the Black and Latino communi- ties, particularly looking at how race and inequity intersect with issues of business, education and health. The two-year assignment begins in June 2021. Executive Editor Katrice Hardy said she considers it an honor that the Star was chosen as one of 64 new partner organiza- tions within Report for America in support of the organization's mission to provide local communities with important, impactful journalism. "Earlier this year, IndyStar made a commitment to better reflect our diverse and growing community," Hardy said. "With the help of Report for America, we will hire one new reporter next year to work with other IndyStar journalists to continue to enhance coverage of several key issues that disproportionately affects Latino and Black communities, including business, education and health."
