By Jay Bobbin Many people clearly feel the chill- ing work of Stephen King is worth revisiting. Relatively soon after movie remakes of "It" and "Pet Sematary," the saga widely considered the iconic author's masterpiece is getting another screen run. The source of a 1994 miniseries, "The Stand" gets a fresh treatment that CBS All Access begins stream - ing weekly on Thursday, Dec. 17. Whoopi Goldberg heads a large ensemble cast as Mother Abagail, one of the flu-pandemic survivors who band together to battle the powerful, lethal "Dark Man" (Alexander Skars - gard) for the fate of the world. King has written a new coda for this version, part of the lure for Greg Kinnear, who returns to television to play another of those embroiled in an epic fight between forces of good and evil. The "As Good As It Gets" Oscar nominee and former "Talk Soup" and "Later" host recalls "The Stand" was the first of many King works he's read, making "an indelible impres - sion ... dark, Gothic and unexpected. And it's just a great adventure. "I've thought often about why it's stood the test of time," Kinnear reflects, "and why its legion of fans is as strong as it is. I think there's just a tone to that book that is very hard to capture. It knows what it is, and it's got some very clear through lines and interesting assessments of good vs. evil. I never thought I would end up in a filmed version of it, but it's a great thrill." Partially directed by Josh Boone — with whom Kinnear made the 2012 movie "Stuck in Love" — "The Stand" also features James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, Henry Zaga, Owen Teague ("Bloodline"), Heather Graham, Hamish Linklater ("Legion"), Katherine McNamara ("Shadowhunters"), Daniel Sunjata, Natalie Martinez, ("Kingdom") and Clifton Collins Jr. "I worked with just about every - body," Kinnear notes, who describes his "The Stand" character Glen Bateman as a "weed-smoking, banjo- philosophy-spouting guy. In that character, I think Stephen captured someone who's searching, but who also has this great skepticism. He's at peace with the end of the world, and that makes him kind of a romantic character. And fun to play." Filming of "The Stand" was wind - ing down in Vancouver as the coro- navirus pandemic was ramping up. "It wasn't until I was already home that the NBA started shutting down and all the big moves started to hap- pen," Kinnear says, "but even prior to that, I was reading a few little excerpts about this strange thing in China. It wasn't getting much atten- tion, but it was out there. "I mean, what are the odds?," Kinnear concludes. "Over many years of working, I've made nothing about a pandemic except when there was a pandemic." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop CBS All Access takes 'The Stand' by re- making Stephen King saga Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie One of the things Steven Strait loves most about playing his char- acter of space frigate captain Jim Holden on "The Expanse" is his evolutionary arc. In the first four seasons of the Amazon space drama, which returns for Season 5 Wednesday, Dec. 16, the New York-born and raised actor has seen his character grow from a naive, idealistic young man into a very good leader with his feet planted firmly on the ground, so to speak. But as with any maturation pro - cess, there is usually suffering. He's seen the protomolecule builder civilization killed off, he's been forced to make horrific decisions where there was no good outcome and those experiences have turned him into a realist. And Strait has gone along for the ride, moulding the character along the way. "My goal with Holden," Strait explains, "was to show the realistic Checking in with Steven Strait evolution of a leader. You know, this is not a guy who is born to lead in the beginning. You know, he didn't even want it. What he did have is an ethical core and he's a deeply good person. And we see him over the years and over the seasons go through these really hard decisions and stumble quite a bit and have some pretty ugly mo - ments because he's overwhelmed, because he's afraid that he's not do- ing the right thing. And I wanted to show that. "You know, I think so often the hero arc in storytelling — there is no courage without fear — I wanted to show that with Holden," he continues. "He's become who everyone needs him to be because he has leapt into the void, so to speak. It doesn't mean he wasn't afraid. It's just his sense of duty and his sense of values gave him no other choice within himself. ... By the time we see him at Season 5, (I want viewers to) understand why this man is capable of handling this responsibility, why he is sure in his decisions and confident enough to admit when he's wrong at this point as well."
