ASK ABOUT ASK ABOUT 0% INTEREST 0% INTEREST Hope's Chest to benefit from shaving challenge Some people will go to great lengths to help animals. Steve Nye is definitely one of those people. Nye is a board member for Hope's Chest, a local nonprofit that provides a range of criti- cally important veterinary and related services for animals. Realizing that the organization was not going to be able to do its usual fundraisers this year, Nye thought of a way he could help. "Most folks have rarely seen me without a beard," says Nye. "I have not trimmed my beard nor cut my hair since January 29, 2020. If $20,000 can be raised for Hope's Chest by Jan. 31, 2021, then I will allow Dr. Deanna Moseley-Lawence to use the dog clippers to give me 'mutton chop' sideburns before completely buzzing my beard and hair away." Nye promises that this shearing will take place live on social media for all to see. He goes on to offer a further challenge to pos- sible contributors: "If $25,000 is raised, then Doc can buzz the beard AND my head. Maybe I will even get an inverse Mohawk haircut before it all goes! But my guess is that I will still have my hair and my beard. So I hope folks will prove me wrong and rise up to the challenge." This isn't the first time that Nye has offered up his beard to raise funds for Hope's Chest. Five years ago, he did a similar challenge, and donors came through with $38,000. Dr. Moseley- Lawrence then shaved Nye's beard in a video that was shared on social media. Nye has been a supporter of Hope's Chest since its very beginning in 2009. "I can remember when Dr. Moseley-Lawrence began her private veterinary practice," says Nye. "In addition to caring for her regular patients, she also took great care with those that needed it the most. This extra effort always came out of her own wallet. It was her dedication to all of her patients that made a difference to me. I thought to myself, 'that is an individual whose mission I can support.'" Nye says that he knows the pandemic has been hard on everyone. "The need to provide resources and care to animals has not gone away during Covid, but the ability to raise funds in a traditional manner has been suspended for the time being," he says. It was in thinking through this situation that it occurred to Nye that social media might provide a solution to the dilemma. "So broadcasting a shearing of my beard in early 2021 seemed like a way I could help Hope's Chest," he says. "It will all be done with Doc gowned up and others socially distanced on the porch of Hope Animal Hospital. Of course, the only clippers available will be the ones used in the daily course of trimming fur away from the parts of dogs and cats that are being treated by the good doctor and the technicians." To donate to the challenge and for more infor- mation about the possible shaving event, search for "Hope's Chest Inc." on Facebook, or visit the organization's website at www.HopesChestInc.org. Hope's Chest Board member Steve Nye has issued a chal- lenge to potential donors: if they raise $50,000 for the charity by Jan. 31, 2021, he will let his hair and beard be trimmed with dog clippers by Veteranarian Dr. Deanna Moseley-Lawrence. Pickle is one of many dogs helped by Hope's Chest. Hope's Chest also helps cats. Here JoJo is being held by volunteer Katie. Shop Local Shop Local Shelby Shelby See Gift Guide Pages 12 & 13
