Lo que en octubre había comenzado como una esperanza retuiteada en las redes sociales, de pronto, se materializó. El prisionero político más visible de Venezuela había burlado la férrea vigilancia que la dictadura de Nicolás Maduro tenía frente a la embajada de España en Caracas, donde López estuvo protegido por más de un año. Terminaban así más de seis años de cárcel, torturas y persecución desde que fue arrestado durante una mani- festación en las calles de Caracas en febrero de 2014 y acusado por la dictadura de incitar a la violencia. Pasó casi cuatro años en la prisión de Ramo Verde, luego le otorgaron casa por cárcel por problemas de salud y finalmente, tras un fallido intento de levantamiento el 30 de abril de 2019, buscó refugio en la embajada espa- ñola. Maduro, no controlas nada, se mofó en su cuenta de Twitter el presidente interino de Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, reconocido por cerca de 60 países. Burlando tu aparato represivo, lo- gramos sacar a territorio internacional a Leopoldo. Pocos saben cómo salió escondido de Venezuela y él tampoco quiere decirlo. No te puedo dar detalles, me dijo durante una entrevista reciente desde Madrid y a través de la tableta de su esposa, la defensora de los derechos humanos Lilian Tintori. La verdad es que ha habido una retaliación por parte de la dictadura: más de 14 personas están detenidas en estos momentos, gente que nada tuvo que ver con mi salida. Pero sí me explicó por qué decidió huir. Las circunstancias de mi estadía en la embajada cambiaron, me dijo. Llegué a la conclusión de que podía contribuir mucho más desde fuera: apoyando a nuestro presidente Juan Guaidó, apoyando nuestra causa, siendo una voz de [...] nuestra lucha por la libertad de Venezuela. Esa cruzada por la vuelta a la de- mocracia se ha vuelto más compleja: el domingo 6 de noviembre habrá elecciones para elegir una nueva Asamblea Nacional, el último bastión legítimo de Venezuela y hasta ahora en manos de la oposición al régimen de Maduro. Según la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), no existen las condiciones democráticas mínimas para unos comicios libres y transparentes. Todo parece indicar que Venezuela profundizará su deriva autoritaria y las voces de líderes como López se hacen más impor- tantes. Leopoldo ha vivido seis años durísi- mos. Nunca me he arrepentido, me contó, ya reunido con sus tres hijos. Pasé un tiempo difícil en la cárcel. Cuatro años de aislamiento, de tortura tortura que, por cierto, ha sido refle- jada en los informes de la ONU. Pero nunca me arrepentí, ni me arrepiento en estos momentos. Es parte de la lu- cha. Y si nosotros estamos dispuestos a liderar, tenemos que estar dispues- tos a sufrir lo que significa enfrentar una dictadura. Un reciente reporte del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas sobre Ven- ezuela acusó al régimen de Maduro de asesinatos, violaciones, torturas y represión. Hugo Chávez, quien con su estilo unipersonal concentró casi todo el poder en Venezuela desde 1999 y creó las bases de la actual dictadura, murió de cáncer en 2013. Entonces muchos pensaban que no podría haber chavismo sin Chávez. Sin embargo, Nicolás Maduro sigue en el poder. ¿Lo subestimaron?, le pregunté a Leopoldo. Nicolás Maduro es mucho peor que Hugo Chávez, me contestó. No es un líder ideológico [...]. Repre- senta a una estructura criminal que le ha dado amparo a grupos militares, paramilitares, criminales, corruptos de distintas partes del continente y del mundo [...]. Yo sí creo que se subestimó. Nosotros en 2014 fuimos muy claros al decir que en Venezuela estábamos viviendo una dictadura. Y por eso fui a la cárcel. La pregunta ahora es cómo sacar a Maduro del poder. El actual asesor presidencial estadounidense para asuntos de Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, ha dicho que no habrá soluciones mágicas en Venezuela y ya nadie habla de una opción militar. Una parte de la oposición venezolana jugó con la idea de participar en las elec- ciones legislativas del domingo. Pero ya no. La OEA, España y otros países no van a reconocer los resultados. Será otro fraude más con el objetivo de consolidar el poder de Maduro. Leopoldo tampoco cree que la solución sea una negociación con Maduro. Yo creo que es ingenuo, me dijo. A estas alturas, después de haber intentado, no uno, sino más de seis procesos de negociación con Maduro tenemos que llegar a la conclusión de que no hay la voluntad por parte de él de llegar a una salida negociada. Leopoldo cree que hay que continuar con la presión, con las sanciones individuales, focalizadas, estratégicas y con el esfuerzo legal para acusar a los responsables de tortura, represión y homicidio. Pero tarde o temprano, Leopoldo va a regresar a Venezuela. Estoy conven- cido que vamos a regresar, me dijo.Y cuando digo vamos hablo de un gran plural porque [...] somos millones de venezolanos que estamos en el exilio [...]. Ya diseñaremos la estrategia para poder regresar. Pero vamos a regresar y vamos a ver a una Venezuela libre. El cambio real solo se puede dar por los venezolanos en Venezuela. Mientras tanto, Leopoldo reapre- nde lo que es vivir en libertad y a usar un iPad, su nuevo contacto con el mundo en medio de la pandemia. Lilian, quien peleó con fiereza por él en muchos foros internacionales, no supo que se había escapado de Venezuela hasta que él le llamó de un lugar seguro. Al llegar a Madrid le pidió a las autoridades que lo dejarán salir por una puerta del aeropuerto sin la vigilancia de periodistas para darle una sorpresa a sus hijos. Su hija mayor, Manuela, y su hijo, Leopoldo, lo abrazaron sin despegarse tras abrir la puerta de la casa. Pero su hija Federica de dos años y medio con quien solo tenía una relación vía FaceTime desde la embajada española no se lo creía y se apartó. Ahora, gracias a una peligrosa y complicada escapatoria, Federica ya tiene a un papá en tres dimensiones. Yo quiero que millones de familias puedan vivir esa felicidad, me dijo antes de despedirse.
