By Andy Heuring Seniors Kenzie Powell and Mallory Hickey combined for 21 points on Senior night to propel the Chargers over ri- val Wood Memorial 52-39. Pike Central used a 20 -point third quarter blitz to take con- trol of the game they trailed by four at halftime. Kenzie Powell knocked down three, three-pointers on her way to a 13-point night. Hickey had eight second-half points to help the Chargers to their sec- ond win of the season. None was bigger than Pow- ell's running three-pointer at the buzzer of the third quar- ter. "That was the shot of the night. It really gave us mo- mentum going into the fourth quarter," said Charger Coach Kyle McCutchan. Pike Central had clawed their way to a 37-33 lead as Hickey knocked down a driv- ing bucket with 26 seconds left in the third quarter. The Trojans decided to hold the ball for one shot. Instead, Pow- ell stepped in front of a pass to the wing with just under three seconds left. Powell drove across mid-court and pulled up near the three-point line and launched it on the run just before the buzzer. Her 22-foot- er ripped through the net, giv- ing the Chargers a 40 -33 lead heading into the fourth quar- ter and bringing a big smile to Powell's face. Pike Central extended their lead to 42-33 at the 5:43 mark on a drive by freshman Brailey Mills. Neither team scored again until the 2:55 mark when Powell was fouled on a drive. She hit both free- throws to make it 44-33. Wood mounted a small comeback af- ter a bucket by Kaitlyn Jarboe on the inside near the two min- ute mark and a three pointer a minute later to make it 46 -39, but they never got closer. Hickey drove the lane with 37 seconds left and hit Hunt with a nice bounce pass in the paint. Hunt finished with a lay-up for her 15th and 16th points. She was the high scor- er for the night, as she scored in every quarter for the Char- gers. "Every team who scouts us is going to try to stop Mallo- ry on the block. She is a good player and a big girl inside. Even when she isn't scoring, she frees other people up for us," said McCutchan. "We rely on both our se- niors to handle ball for us. Hickey really isn't a guard, but I rely on her in that posi- tion often," said McCutchan. Brailey Mills knocked down a 10 footer to cap the scorer at 52-39. It was a hard-fought game from start to finish. Powell was hot from the start for the Chargers. She opened the Chargers scoring with a three-pointer at the 5:42 mark of the first quarter to give them a 3-2 lead. Mad- ison Frederick answered for Wood with a three and Jar- boe got a bucket in the paint to make it 7-3. Hunt drew the Chargers to 7-6 when she scored in traffic and then hit a free-throw with 2:20 left. Hunt scored her second old-fash- ioned three with 24 seconds left to make it 11-9 with 24 sec- onds left in the first. Wood held the ball until the 10 -second mark and then found freshman Jillian Page in the corner and she launched a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Wood a 14-11 lead at the end of one. Hunt scored on the Char- gers' first possession of the second quarter, but Page countered with a three for Wood to make it 17-13. Pike Central took their first lead of the second quar- ter when Hunt scored her sev- enth point on a turnaround in the paint making it 18 -17 with just over three minutes left in the half. Wood outscored Pike Cen- tral 9 -2 over the last three min- utes of the half to take a 26 -20 lead into halftime. It was Wood Memorial's first game of the year. "John- ny (Bartley) does a good job with them. They always play good defense. Always know they are going to be a tough team. You have to beat them, they aren't going to beat them- selves," said McCutchan. "I'm proud of the girls. We are competitive. It was good to win a close game and pull out a win in the fourth quarter," said McCutchan.
