What can be ev- eryone's favorite store is now open on Sun- days. Christmas holiday hours for the Choco- late Bliss and Kitchen Essentials are Sundays from noon until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Chocolate Bliss and Kitchen Essentials, located on the Jasper Courthouse square, can be contacted at 812-482-1617 and are on Facebook. Christmas chocolates, candies and the new- est kitchen gadgets are the main fare in this shop, located for more than seven years on the northwest corner of the Jasper Court House Square. Ann Knies opened Chocolate Bliss 15 years ago on October 28, which is National Chocolate Day. She said, "Starting as a gour- met chocolate shop in 2005, we have branched out to offer something unique and special to our community. Our kitchen store is full of the coolest gadgets, helping you to furnish your home, while enjoying delectable chocolates." "Our current store is our third location in 15 years, due to outgrowing the previous two. We've been in this location for seven and a half years and it feels like home. I've always wanted to own a business and as I was making some changes in my life, I thought what is one more? So, after some planning, I turned in my resig- nation, one of the scariest and most exciting days of my life. My previous positions at Stens, Tierra and Kimball International gave me valu- able experience that helped me succeed in own- ing my own business. I knew I wanted to bring something different to the area, not just com- pete with an already existing business. When I traveled for business, I frequently brought back gifts and I focused on what were some of those items I brought back that we did not have in our area. A really good specialty choc- olate was one of those things." "Paying attention and listening to customers' needs helped grow the business. I still look for the voids in product selection that we have in our area. Just because we live in small cities and towns doesn't mean we can't have nice things." "We have a 12-foot candy case, where you can pick your favorite chocolates. Turtles, seas salt caramels, chocolate-covered nuts, truf- fl es, peanut butter squares, just to name a few. There are so many choices. Christmas is es- pecially magical. We have nostalgic feel good candies and chocolates. Chocolate stars, rib- bon candy, chocolate Santas from Germany, just to name a few. Then there is the fudge. We make more than a ton of fudge every year. We have a large selection of whole bean cof- fees, hot chocolates and tea, Stonewall Kitchen jams, pancake mixes, salsas, pepper jellies, digs and soup mixes. Charcuterie boards continue to be popular. We carry Boar's Head meats, cheeses and condiments to make an impres- sive display." Kitchen Essentials carries Wusthof knives, bakeware brands like USA pan and Air Bake. Cookware, grilling items, bar ware, dish tow- els and every gadget imaginable are there to choose from. Knies said, "I've been blessed with a won- derful family and staff, which are family, too. I have two children, a son, Brook, and his beau- tiful fi ance, Melanie. A daughter, Cassy, and wonderful son-in-law, Luke. They have given me three grandchildren: Zane, Rayln and Mae. They are so special, and yes, they get whatever they want in the store. I've been blessed with the best staff and customers." Knies explains, "for now, it's going to be two months involving me all the time. This is what I signed up for. I am off more in the summer, but right now is the time for businesses. The fourth quarter is big." She added, "During the economic down turn, we fought through that, but this is totally different. Every day is a brand new challenge. It is out of my control." She refl ected on her ability to get products for her Chocolate Bliss and Kitchen Essen- tials, and what the future holds for businesses in general. She said, "We could be open or shut down," due to the effects of the pandemic on business and the government, but she is more concerned about an "economic collapse" that would affect every aspect of life in this country. To keep things on the bright side, she has considered a "COVID jar" that would require donations whenever the pandemic comes up in conversation. Of course, chocolate and kitch- en essentials would be the preferred conver- sation starters. The staff at Chocolate Bliss/Kitchen Essentials includes (l to r): Sue Reckelhoff, Amily Jochim, Allison Wagner, Rachel Lorett and owner Ann Knies.
