Cathy Robinson, Executive Director of the Abuse Prevention Council of Cleve- land County, hands the keys to “The Beacon” men’s shelter to the new Opera- tions Manager, David Blanton of the Interfaith Alliance who will now run the facility. Jess Powell, Chairman of the Board of Interfaith Alliance, looks on. The Interfaith Alliance is now in charge of “The Beacon” men’s shelter and the op- erations manager will be David Blanton. With the help of many churches in Cleve- land County, the intention is to move “The Beacon”, now located at 301 North Washington St., Shelby, to a newer and larger facility. The present facility is in need of repair and is very overcrowded. The intention of the Interfaith Alliance is to buy a new facility that would not only offer a shelter, but would offer programs designed to get men back to work, have rejuvenated self-esteem and become an asset to themselves and the community. With the dedicated efforts of area churches through the Interfaith Council, this is a giant step forward in helping our area’s homeless. –M. A. Andrews Choose From The Sweet Deals Menu Celebrating America At Ham’s Restaurant At the “Celebrating America” parking lot party this past Friday, July 2nd at Ham’s Restaurant , the celebration included food, fun and entertainment. Pictured above, “Rocky Yelton and the Hired Guns” were just one of three bands that per- formed. The other two bands were “Moonshine Jenny” and “Carribean Cowboy”. A cornhole and basketball toss challenged all comers and the Monster Truck on display was a big hit. The party concluded with everyone enjoying the fi reworks display across the road at Cleveland Mall. –M. A. Andrews JULY BLIZZARD OF THE MONTH Buy One Blizzard at 814 S. I sat down for this interview in the fellowship hall at David Memorial Baptist Church this past Sunday at 3 p.m. As I shared thoughts and ambitions with him, I realized how focused Christian is on his life and future. Very few young men are pursuing what he is and clearly know what, where, and how they are going to get there. Christian is a most appropriate name for him. His intention is to do Christian work any- where in the world. The more the need, the more he wants to go and help. His ultimate goal is to be an ordained minister and registered nurse, then become a medical missionary. What brought Christian Mullis to our attention, is out of 222 appli- cants he was selected to receive $5000 as the recipient of the “Steve Porter Memorial Scholarship”. The award commends Christian for his “dedication and academic achievements”. It is a scholarship program given by IHG, the InterContinental Hotels Group. After a brief illness Steve Porter, President of IHG Americas, passed away on August 9, 2008. In honor of Steve’s devotion to “people taking care of people”, IHG founded the memorial scholarship. It is available to full-time em- ployees of IHG’s children up to the age of 23. Christian’s mother works for IHG. If you spend some time with Christian Mullis you eventually come to the conclusion that the one word that describes him best is “refresh- ing”! His fi rst missionary experience came when he went on a week long mission with World Changers at the age of eleven. Since then, he’s went on many more mission trips. More recently, he spent a summer in Peru and nine months in Oaxaca, Mexico from August 2009 to April 2010 through the Global Frontier Missions. Christian wants to “make a mark” by serving communities academi- cally and religiously. He likes teaching and working with kids through the youth committee. Prior to being home schooled the last two years of high school, he attended Kings Mountain High School. While there, he auditioned for the very fi rst time for a part in the play “God Spell”. Now, how prophetic is this? He was cast and played the part of John the Baptist! His favorite part of the Bible is the story of Esther. He will tell you that his determination to become a medical missionary gets “stronger every Christian Mullis was shocked and surprised to fi nd out that he was the recipient of the $5,000 Steve Porter Memorial Scholarship. day.” His mind is made up and his uncluttered life-style inspires you to believe that his goal will be achieved. He begins his four year major course in Biblical Studies at Mid-Atlantic Christian in Elizabeth City this fall. His minor will be nursing. Christian Scott Mullis..... decisive, dedicated, and determined. Without a doubt he will defi nitely make his dream come true. by M. A.
