May is High Blood Pressure Education Month. High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease. "High blood pressure is often called a 'silent killer' because many people have it but don't know it," said Lynn Hensley, Rutherford Regional Health System's nursing and patient education coordinator. "Over time, people who do not get treated for high blood pressure can get very sick or even die. High blood pressure can cause life-threatening illnesses such as kidney problems, stroke, heart failure, blindness and heart attacks." High blood pressure typically develops over many years. For most adults, there isn't a known cause for high blood pressure. But, there are several risk factors for developing high blood pressure. "Anyone can have high blood pressure," Hensley continued. "Some people more likely to have high blood pressure are people of African-American descent and people with a family history of high blood pressure. Your chances of having high blood pressure are higher if you are overweight, eat foods high in salt, do not get regular exercise, smoke or drink alcohol heavily." Most people with high blood pressure do not have symptoms, although a few people with early-stage high blood pressure may have dull headaches, dizzy spells or more nosebleeds than normal. Fortunately, once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it. "There are steps you can take to control your blood pressure. If your doctor has decided that you need medication to help control your blood pressure, make sure you take it every day, and preferably at the same time every day," Hensley explained. "Take your blood pressure often to make sure you are keeping it under control. Exercise daily or at least four days per week. Eat foods low in salt. Lose weight or keep your weight at a healthy level. Do not smoke, and limit your alcohol intake. See your doctor of health care practitioner on a regular basis." If you believe you are at risk for high blood pressure, talk with your family physician about checking your blood pressure more frequently.
