Opposite page, top: Completing their
Sunset Patrol is observer Renee Savage
and pilot Gene Bunt.
Opposite page, bottom: The northern
terminus of the sixteen checkpoints on
a normal Sunset Patrol is Manasquan
Inlet.
Right: This distressed vessel was
en route to Florida from Staten Island
on Labor Day 2009. Trying to escape
the rough seas, it ran aground in
Little Egg Inlet. The retired couple
were air-lifted by the U.S. Coast Guard,
and the vessel was totally destroyed.
Below: Gravel pits are included in
the flight plan checklist. The remote
sites tend to lure would-be party-
goers but often have hazardous con-
ditions and are therefore monitored
by local authorities. This is the 7,000
acre Heritage Minerals mining site in
Manchester Township. The very cold,
mineral-laden water (which reduces
buoyancy) and shifting shoreline sands
are attributed to a number of drown-
ings at the site.
