By George Dickie We all know Olaf as the beloved snowman from the "Frozen" mov- ies. How he developed into the uber-optimistic character he came to be is explored in an animated short upcoming on Disney+. "Once Upon a Snowman," which begins streaming Friday, Oct. 23, fills in the blanks between when Elsa created him as she was "letting it go" and building her ice palace and when Anna and Krist- off meet him in the forest in the original 2013 Oscar-winner "Fro- zen." It follows his footsteps as he comes to life and searches for his identity in the snowy mountains outside the kingdom of Arendelle. Josh Gad returns to voice the innocent though insightful Olaf and much of the production team from "Frozen" and its 2019 sequel "Frozen II" is also present here. The film was a passion project for directors Trent Correy and Dan Abraham and came about from an idea Correy had while working as an animator on the first "Frozen" movie. "The story started off as a very basic 'What happens to Olaf dur- ing these moments?' " Correy explains. "And when Elsa makes him, Olaf doesn't have his carrot nose so the premise was always Olaf finding his nose. And it's not that the short took a long time to write, it's just that it took a long time for the right timing for it to be made ... . "But ('Frozen' and 'Frozen II' writer/director/producer) Jennifer Lee and Dan Abraham, they've both really pushed like, 'What is the deeper meaning behind this short?' so that it became kind of less of a gag short of Olaf just try - ing to find his nose and we put that Disney heart behind it." And a lot of that soulfulness comes from Gad. A lifelong Dis- ney fan, the actor and producer has been an enthusiastic par- ticipant in the "Frozen" universe from the outset and both direc- tors credit him with bringing a dimension to the character that isn't on the page. "The guy is Olaf," Abraham says, "like we give him a script and he does the script but ... the im- prov that he does and the embel- lishments and the little giggles or sighs or whatever it is, like nobody else could do that. Like nobody else can be Olaf but him. It's amaz- ing what he brings to bring that character to life." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop Disney+ reveals the backstory of Olaf in 'Once Upon a Snowman' Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie Being a part of the "Star Trek" universe was never on David Aja- la's radar but taking on the char- acter of Cleveland "Book" Booker was a challenge he couldn't resist. In the third season of "Star Trek: Discovery," currently streaming new episodes Thurs- days on CBS All Access, the storyline advances 930 years, where the crew of the titular star- ship land after going through a wormhole. Now living in a time of uncertainty, they work with new friends to restore hope to the Federation. Booker is one of them, a smart, capable man with a natural charisma and a devil-may-care attitude that tends to get him in trouble — a character that took the 34-year-old British actor out of his comfort zone. "There was something about the character which was re- ally profound and which really touched my spirit," he explains. Checking in with David Ajala "And this was a guy who has been ostracized from his family and he's had to find a purpose bigger than himself in order to survive and keep living and pushing forward. And as simple and pro- found as it is, I found that really timely for myself and where I was physically, spiritually and mental- ly. So I thought, 'You know what? This could be an experience that might be beneficial to me.' And I've actually found it to be very cathartic, actually, surprisingly." Also somewhat daunting was coming in as the new guy on an established series, but Ajala indi- cates the cast made him feel like a part of the family from the outset. "That's the kind of working en- vironment you want to be in," he says. "I love working with these individuals because everyone in front of the camera and behind the camera is constantly pushing themselves to raise the bar. They do that independently and then they do that collectively and it's one of the most thriving atmo- spheres you can be in."
