MAY 2013 Page 8A • FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY Pfeiffer new KM football coach Arrowhead grad replaces Wiltz By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff WALES – Dave Pfeiffer didn't call Mike Fink for a job interview. Pfeiffer was calling the Kettle Moraine High School athletic director on behalf of another candidate for the school's varsity football coaching position. "When the opening first came about, I didn't even inquire," Pfeiffer said. "I called Mr. Fink on behalf of a guy I used to coach with at Concordia University, and Mike basically asked me why I didn't apply . "He called me back and convinced me to apply and I did." Pfeiffer has an extensive coaching résumé – most recently as defensive coordinator at Arrowhead last season – and that led to his selection as the new coach at Kettle Moraine. "I've known David for a long, long time," Fink said. "I competed against him. He was in the Waukesha district for quite a while. "When you meet the guy, he's very straightforward. What he tells you and what you see is what you get. He's not going to try to fool people. He's not going to try to convince players of things he doesn't believe in." At a glance Who: Dave Pfeiffer What: Kettle Moraine High School football coach Age: 56 Education: 1974 graduate of Arrowhead High School, 1978 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College with a degree in physical education and health Residence: Waukesha Family: wife, Melissa; children Jacob, 27, and Elizabeth, 25 Pfeiffer graduated from Arrowhead in 1974. Pfeiffer's first coaching position was as the freshman coach at Evansville in 1979. He was a varsity assistant at Arrowhead for two years, the junior varsity coach at Hamilton for two years and coached at Horning Middle School in 1983. He was the defensive coordinator at Waukesha South from 1984 to 1987 before going back to Horning for a year. He was the defensive coordinator at Waukesha North from 1989 to 1992 and held the same position with Team USA, a team of high school players that played international competition, in 1993. He was the defensive coordinator at New Berlin West in 1994 and '95 before spending 1996 to 2006 as head coach at Sheboygan South. He spent a year as a consul- tant at Kewaskum, spent two years as offensive line coach at Concordia and returned to Kewaskum as a consultant in 2011. He came back to his alma mater last season as defensive coordinator for the undefeated WIAA Division 1 state champions. "The field is named after my dad," Pfeiffer said of his father, Franklin. "I was an OK player. I was all-conference my junior and senior years." In 20-plus years of coaching, Pfeiffer has guided different positions and feels comfortable in whatever position he coaches. He believes that versatility should serve him well as he rounds out his coaching staff. "I feel pretty confident in being well-rounded," Pfeiffer said. "I think I'm pretty good on offense as well as defense. "I have some awfully good friends in the Waukesha, Hartland and New Berlin areas that, once I get my feet on the floor, we'll see if they're interested in being involved." Kettle Moraine was 2-6 last season and 4-5 in 2011 under Darnell Wiltz, who resigned after two seasons. The Lasers last qualified for the WIAA playoffs in 2008. "The infrastructure is there, and the administration is committed," Pfeiffer said of Kettle Moraine. Email: dmike@conleynet.com – Freeman Staff Kettle Moraine's Foltz swings away at school and in own yard Senior sparks softball team By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff WALES – Hannah Foltz rarely goes a day without swinging a bat. It's been that way since she was a young child, and it's continued through her time at Kettle Moraine High School. Foltz will swing at practice during the high school season. She'll swing during the club season. She swings regularly at STiKS Academy in Oconomowoc. And when she cannot get away from home, she's at home swinging away on the field her father built in their yard. "My dad built it when I was in 10U, because it was really hard to find practice fields," said Foltz, a senior at KM. "It's got bases, a backstop, everything." Her father allows teams to practice on the field, but the field's purpose was to help his daughter improve. She took full advantage, earning first-team All-Classic 8 Conference honors as a sophomore and junior and earning all-region recognition last year. "I practice every day, nonstop," she said. "I'm always hitting. "All my free time goes to that. I play select and travel all over. Softball is my life." That dedication to softball has impressed KM coach Scott Graf. "The kid's work ethic is unbelievable," Graf said. "I've never had a kid work as hard as her. I wouldn't be surprised if she takes 500 to 700 swings a week." Foltz began playing softball at age 6, and she took to the game quickly. She enjoyed the different aspects of the game and that so many things happened at once. The third baseman was a member of the Wisconsin Lightning 14U team that won nationals, and she currently plays with the Kenosha Cyclones club team. She's been a third baseman as long as she can remember, and it's a posi- tion that keeps her active – which she always enjoys. "My defensive skills are probably the one thing that I've always been really good at," she said. "Growing up I always played third, starting on a boys baseball team. "I really like it because it's so quick and the ball comes at you really fast. There's slaps, hard hits, a little bit of everything. "I don't do a lot of standing around. I'm always moving, because there's always a play." Foltz has hit over .400 in each of her first three seasons at KM, and she's added more power each year. "She can hit all over the field, which is rare for a power hitter like her," Graf said. "She could play any- where on the field except for pitcher, and I'm sure if she put the time in, she could be good at that, too. She could play anywhere. "She came up as a third baseman, and she knows what to do. She's a very good baserunner, too. She's got a lot of talent." Foltz recently added other fitness programs to her preparation for softball, and her competitiveness travels with her away from the diamond. "I'm very competitive, almost all the time," Foltz said. "In gym class, I definitely go over the top. "But in softball, if people make a mistake, I'm understanding. I can keep it under control." She'll take that competi- ee! auk Pew Destination tiveness to Indiana Tech, an NAIA school where Foltz will play softball. The pitching coach of the Kenosha Cyclones, Sam Berrios, is a pitcher for the Warriors. "They have a very good team," Foltz said. "I really liked the chemistry between the coaches and the girls, and it's a beautiful campus." And when she comes home, she'll always have a backyard for practice. "He really likes having it, because he and his friends put it together," Foltz said of her father, who coaches at KM and for select teams. "I'm guessing it'll stay, because he will probably still coach." Email: dmike@conleynet.com SHOP & DINE I can help you save time and money.
