By Jay Bobbin Wealthy people's problems have fu- eled some of television's most popular series, and a new show is aiming to join those ranks. Originally intended for last sea- son, "The Help" filmmaker Tate Taylor's "Filthy Rich" helps Fox's pandemic-impacted fall lineup as it debuts Monday, Sept. 21. Also one of its producers, "Sex and the City" alum Kim Cattrall heads the cast as a wealthy Southern family's matriarch who suddenly loses her husband (Gerald McRaney) ... but surprisingly gains three relatives, the illegitimate children named in his will. Immedi - ately, all concerned move into action to retain what they feel is rightfully theirs, which doesn't match up in most cases. Aubrey Dollar ("Women's Murder Club"), Broadway veteran Corey Cott ("Bandstand") and Olivia Macklin also portray members of the show's central Monreaux clan, whose dynasty prominently includes the religion-based — and, it turns out, ironically named — Sunshine television network. Melia Kreiling ("Salvation"), Benjamin Levy Aguilar and Mark L. Young play the newly discovered relations, with Steve Harris ("The Practice") and Aaron Lazar also are regulars in the series from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's company Imagine Entertainment. "I don't come from the South," Cattrall notes. "I was not raised in a religious household. All of these (were) new aspects to this character for me, but it was a wonderful op- portunity to sort of take that magical (journey of ) if I was this person, if I was filthy rich, if I had children. The (pilot) script was a one-off, in the sense that it was dealing with very se - rious topics and questions about faith and family and secrets. It just felt new and fresh, and I wanted to take this journey, especially with Tate Taylor." A writer, director and executive pro- ducer on "Filthy Rich" as well as its creator, Taylor says he "wanted to do a great show. I love extreme conflict, where you're just going, 'What???' And the idea came to me to have this strong Christian family faced with the most impossible of situations that rocks their faith to the core. And you realize that whatever side of the line you are on, as far as how devout you feel, you are a human and you are go - ing to make mistakes." Co-star Dollar reveals that not ev- eryone had all the pieces of the puzzle of "Filthy Rich" during production. "Different people had different secrets they knew about their characters," she notes, "and we would try to guess what they were. It became this weird kind of rumor mill, sharing things we shouldn't share and trying to hit Abe (executive producer Abe Sylvia) or Tate — when they got a little chatty — for pieces of information. It's a very complicated pie." Celebrity Scoop Celebrity Scoop The 'Filthy Rich' have their troubles in new Fox series Cover Story Cover Story By George Dickie If there's been a plus to the pan- demic for Zach Gilford, it's being home with his two-year-old daughter. Not only has the 38-year-old actor, who plays cop Ben Walker in the Fox/Spectrum action series "L.A.'s Finest," gotten to watch her grow alongside his wife, actress Kiele San- chez ("The Glades"), but his imagi- nation has worked overtime to keep up with the youngster's. Which, he says, helps his acting. "We're playing make believe for a living," the Illinois native explains. "And the older you get, I think you lose a little touch with that playful- ness of it all. And you know, when you're playing with a child and you see them, it's like I've seen my daughter shoot ice out of her hands as if she's Elsa (the character from 'Frozen') and she can see ice forming on the wall in her bedroom. "And you know, you put yourself in these situations where you have Checking in with Zach Gilford a camera right in your face and ... it kind of helps you to zone all of that out and just be like, 'Look ... I'm just gonna be here and I can see right through this camera. And I'll just believe whatever's going on.' And it makes it a lot more fun." In Season 2 of "L.A.'s Finest," which begins Monday, Sept. 21, on Fox (and is available on Spectrum on Demand), the story of odd couple police partners Nancy McKenna (Jes - sica Alba) and Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union) continues as they take on a case unlike any they've had before. As for Gilford's character of Walk- er, viewers will get to know him as he gets featured more in storylines. "There's stuff I get to do where I'm kind of on my own and how he acts as a singular person out in the world in certain situations," he explains. "... We do a bit of a partner swap and I'm kind of on a mission with Jessica, and it's like, 'Oh, how do these two characters interact when it's just the two of them?' But I think you get to know these people more and they're more fleshed out." Full name: Zachary Michael Gilford Birth date: Jan. 14, 1982 Birthplace: Evanston, Ill.
