WHOLESALE DEALERS IN RETAILERS FOR CHARGERS CROSS COUNTY Chargers XC prepares for fall By James Capozella Eight boys and eight girls form the Pike Central cross country co-ed team this year and the Lady Chargers have representatives from all four grades. The boys are senior laden with five, plus two soph- omores and a freshman. Three seniors lead the Lady Char- gers, with three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. The three Lady Chargers were part of the semi-state team and saw a fourth place at PAC and sectional, but placed fifth at regional. Libby Stone and Quinlan Teague, a senior/junior duo, are expect- ed to perform high in running and lead the team as well. Se- niors Stone, Jenna Meyer and Charlotte Dudenhoeffer are going to be depended upon and backed by juniors Laney Johnson, Morgan Anderson and Teague. First-year head coach Cain Parker said the Pike Central Chargers "lost Nate Woolery, A.J. Hill and Sam Theising to graduation and the Lady Char- gers lost Shelby Vaughn." Coach added, "Peyton Chaney and Ijaa Chambers look to be my best boys and Libby Stone and Quinlan Teague will prob- ably be my fastest girls. The girls got to regional as a team last year and Peyton Chaney and Ijaa Chambers went as in- dividuals." Asked about what the teams are doing for practice during the pandemic, coach said, "With me being their coach, I have them running a lot more miles and doing bigger, hard- er workouts. My top girl is running 45 miles a week this summer and my top guy is at 40 miles a week. Most of the high school runs at 6 a.m. at Hornady Park, but if any run- ners are out in the afternoon, it is at Prides Creek." The Charger boys' team consists of five seniors in No- ah Russell, Ijaa Chambers, Ethan Gorby, Trent Zimmer- man and Lane Potts. Soph- omores Peyton Chaney and Dallas Reutepohler, and fresh- man Shane Woodhull round out the eight-man team. At PAC last year, the boys placed fifth, but garnered All- PAC and honorable mention All-PAC in Peyton Chanley and Nate Woolery. The girls placed third at the Forest Park PAC, with Libby Stone earn- ing All-Conference honors, while Quinlan Teague, Jen- na Meyer and Kennedy Wil- lis made the honorable men- tion team. The three senior girls are Libby Stone, Jenna Meyer and Charlotte Dudenhoeffer. Quinlan Teague, Morgan An- derson and Laney Johnson make up the juniors, and Ken- nedy Willis is the only sopho- more. Anna Whitehead is the only freshman giving the La- dy Chargers a brace of eight runners. The Chargers get their first start of the season at the For- est Park Invitational on Thurs- day, August 20 and follow that up with the Southridge Invita- tional on Tuesday, August 25. The teams stay on the road the rest of the month with the Harrison Invitational at An- gel Mounds on Saturday, Au- gust 29. September is the same sto- ry, continuing with a road trip to North Knox on Tuesday, September 1, followed by the Alan Hopewell Invitational on Thursday, September 3 at Gib- son Southern High School. Co- lumbus North is the next away stop on Saturday, September 5. The first home course con- test in a four-way on Tuesday, September 8. It is followed by a road trip to Heritage Hills on Saturday, September 12. A fter a six-day break, the teams go north for the South Knox Invi- tational on Saturday, Septem- ber 21. Barr-Reeve is the next road trip on Tuesday, Septem- ber 22 and the Pike Central var- sity teams wrap up the regular season with the Pike Central Invitational at Prides Creek on Saturday, September 26. In addition to coaching middle school, University of Southern Indiana grad Cain Parker is supporting his high school alma mater by taking up the reins of boys' and girls' Charger varsity cross country teams this fall. The 2013 Pike Central grad- uate studied accounting and finance at the University of Southern Indiana (USI), and ran cross country and track for four years, and received All-GLVC and NCA A Division II All-Midwest honors in the 2017-18 cross country season. He was 8th in the 10K (31:38) NCA A championships and fifth in the GLVC 8K (24:50). Parker has 13 girls in fifth through eighth grades on the middle school Lady Charger roster. There are seven boys in fourth through eighth grades who comprise the Charger middle school team. LADY CHARGERS GOLF Young squad off to a good start By Andy Heuring Pike Central's girls' golf team is a young squad with no seniors, but it hasn't pre- vented them from getting off to a 3-0 start. The Chargers have two re- turning starters from last year's squad. Sophie Carnahan, a junior, is the Chargers' number one player. "She has played a ton this summer. So she has got- ten a lot better," said Charger Coach Jarrod Gideon. Gideon said she just start- ed playing last summer, so she has only been playing a little more than a year. "She hits the ball pretty solid. She needs to improve her short game. Some days she will chip and putt well. But that is usually the last thing for young play- ers," said Gideon. The other junior who played varsity last year is Nevaeh Le- mond. She played quite a bit last year. "She has gotten better the more she plays. She played all three years in high school. I have seen a big improvement in her thinking and the way she plans to get around the course. She has learned you can make two bad shots and one good shot and still score a bogey," said Gideon. He said he has several ju- nior girls who are good kids. Sydney Loveless has played all three years in high school as well. "She just needs some confidence in her game," said Gideon. "Across the board, the short game is what is killing us. We get on the green and three putt. I'm even seeing some of our putts. It is just things that will get better the more they play. Chloe Williams, a sopho- more, is a strong athlete. "She is 6'1" and very powerful. She was injured all last year, so she didn't get to play. She is improving fast and will be a good golfer. This is really her first year of playing. Once she gets used to swinging a golf club, she will be able to domi- nate with her power. She can crush the ball." Gideon said Ellie McGuire and Grace Goodpaster both played last year. "They have gotten better." He said a big asset for the team is assistant coach Na- talie Burkhart. "She is a great golfer and good with the girls. She is going to be a big help to me. She is one of the two best golfers we have ever had," said Gideon. He said the girls getting to play with her and see how she plays the course is good for them. Gideon said he doesn't have goals for a number of wins or titles. "It is just to get better and improve as the year goes on. I'm just glad we are getting to play."
