Call 812-380-7453 New, but familiar head coach steps up to lead Lady Chargers By Andy Heuring A winning season is at the top of the wish list for Pike Central's girls' volleyball team, right behind getting to play a season. While the season is scheduled out on paper and the girls have been practicing, getting to play the whole season is still in doubt. They are under the direction of a new coach, but a coach with whom most are familiar. Winslow first grade teacher Stephanie Shedd is in her first season at the varsity level, but she has been coaching the Char- gers' sixth grade team for the last 12 years. "They have a lot of potential. We have a lot of good hitters and setters, and our back row players are strong," said Shedd. Senior Kenzie Powell will be han- dling the Chargers' setting duties. She is someone with whom Shedd is comfortable. "I had her in the sixth grade, so she has been setting for a long time," said Shedd. "Kenzie has a really good serve, and she is a good team leader and scrappy player." Shedd has two freshmen back row players, Lexie Onyett and Car- li Cavanaugh, on either side of Pow- ell. "Both of them will be big assets. They have big serves. Lexi will jump serve. They will go after any ball. They are all over the court and on the floor. We have very good commu- nication on the floor from our back row players." Erica Vinnedge is a middle hitter for the Chargers. "Erica is a strong mid- dle hitter and she is a good blocker." Neeley Correll is another hitter for the chargers. Others who will work into the ro- tation are Lily Willis, Madelyn Wil- liams and Shelby Ridao. Riley Morgan will play in the ro- tation along the back line. Ashlyn Shoultz played freshman, JV and var- sity last year. She is expected to play a lot of varsity this year. "They are all good talkers and have great attitudes," said Shedd. "Our goal is to have a winning sea- son. The girls said they wanted to communicate on the floor well. They said they didn't talk well to each oth- er on the floor and they want to have a winning season." This summer, when Shedd took over and the team was allowed to start meeting, she began by work- ing on basics. "They are a really good group of girls. We have been working really hard. We had two days of condition- ing and two skill days a week since early July. It was, let's get back to the basics. We worked on spiking, block- ing back and row hitting. We didn't put anyone in their spots, we did a lot of drilling and conditioning," said Shedd. She is hoping improved basic skills will turn into more wins.
