The efforts come de- spite the Indiana State School Music As- sociation announcing weeks ago all of their marching band competitions this fall had been cancelled. Pike Central Band Director Chris Ashworth said the band is still working hard, even though they won't be com- peting. He said they will be performing at half-time of the football games and maybe in parades if the parades happen. "We are using our season to keep our skills up. We have a lot of younger kids in the band this year," said Ashworth. He is just recently off back surgery. "I'm happy my staff has been able to step up and take over for me." Ashworth said they have made some significant cutbacks this year. Typically, they purchase music and choreography for their show. "We usually spend about $ 6,000 on it. But this year, we just didn't feel like that was a good investment for four half-time shows." Instead, they let the senior band members pick four Disney songs and the band staff is going to develop and choreograph it in-house. Band camp this year is still very sim- ilar to any year. They typically worked on their music for a couple of hours and then practiced their marching. It includ- ed drill-off exercises that are basically Simon Says games with detailed march- ing instructions. All of it was done with social distancing and masks. Camp started on July 27 and contin- ued through last Friday. When school starts, they practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday morning.
