PRESIDENT The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Juan Andrade is President of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI). Dr. Andrade is the 4th Latino in history to receive the highest civilian honors from both the U.S. and Mexican governments for his service to the community. Andrade is a venerated community leader and co-founded USHLI to maximize the awareness, engagement, and participation of Latinos in civic life. He is celebrating his 50th year of community service. KARINA AYALA- BERMEJO CEO & President Instituto del Progreso Latino Ayala-Bermejo oversees the management of all aspects of Instituto, whose mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino immigrants and their families through education, training, and employment. She oversees an operating budget of $26 million, two charter high schools, and more than 200 employees while she also maintains relationships with national, regional and local leaders. Previously, she served as general counsel and executive vice president of Metropolitan Family Services, one of the oldest nonprofits in Illinois. VERÓNICA GLORIA CEO Spanish Community Center The center began as an emergency response fund to help immigrant families who are in danger of losing their housing or facing medical bills. Gloria has been working night and day to meet the tremendous demand for services since the pandemic started. Her community center in Joliet had demand for food quadruple in the first few weeks of the crisis. Under pressure, she has responded with compassion and creativity. ANTONIO MARTÍNEZ JR. President and CEO Oak Park- River Forest Community Foundation. Martinez leads and directs the advancement and fulfillment of the foundation's mission. Before joining the foundation, Martinez served as director of development for The Chicago Community Trust where he was instrumental in increasing the organization's assets by $1.6 billion. He also worked for the American Bar Association, Museum of Science and Industry and the Chicago Cubs. Martinez is the founder and chair of LEARN West Rogers Park, a collaboration focused on the needs of Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood. RAUL RAYMUNDO CEO The Resurrection Project Raymundo grew up in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago and has long understood the challenges and strengths of working-class and immigrant families. After graduating from Carleton College in Minnesota with a degree in sociology, he decided to live and work in the neighborhood. In 1990 he co-founded what is now known as The Resurrection Project. Parishes raised $30,000 in seed capital that the organization leveraged into $346 million in community investment impacting 38,000 families. MARIA WYNNE CEO Leadership Greater Chicago Leadership Greater Chicago is the region's premier civic leadership development organization. As sales vice president for Xerox and sales general manager for Microsoft, Wynne ran national sales and marketing organizations. At Microsoft, she developed the Office of Citizenship and Innovation, a pro bono project to help U.S. mayors develop workforce readiness plans and initiatives to close the digital divide. After Microsoft, Wynne was CEO for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana from 2008 to 2013. MARTIN CASTRO President and CEO Castro Synergies LLC. As president and CEO of Castro Synergies, Castro leads the largest Hispanic social service agency in the Midwest. COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARD After 30 years of serving as chair of its board of directors, Gonzalez recently became president and CEO. Prior to coming to El Valor, he was vice president for legislative and community affairs at ComEd. In addition to building and stewarding relationships with state legislators and community organizations, Gonzalez was involved with national external diversity initiatives for Exelon Corp, ComEd's parent company. Prior to this position, he was vice president of corporate diversity for Exelon and vice president of diversity for McDonald's Corp. Prior to joining corporate America, Gonzalez was regional Midwest director of the National Council of La Raza and worked at the Chicago Urban League helping women and minorities acquire work in the building and construction trades. Within three years at the Urban League, Gonzalez had placed more than 4,000 women and minorities in skilled, high-paying jobs. El Valor became a model of bilingual, bicultural rehabilitation in Illinois and started the first computer programming training center for people with disabilities. Gonzalez is the co-founder and the board chairman of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, a Chicago-based national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes education, civic participation and leadership development for Latinos and other disenfranchised groups. Rey B. Gonzalez President & CEO El Valor Human Rights Commission. Castro Synergies helps businesses and other organizations have a positive social impact on diverse communities, while Casa Central addresses the needs of the entire family. KARINA GARCIA ALANIS CEO Aurora Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Alanis is the first Latina to hold this position. Under her leadership, the original chamber expanded to a regional organization serving businesses in the western suburbs of Chicago. Alanis was born in Mexico City and immigrated with her parents to Illinois at the age of 9. She serves as board member of the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, the Aurora Puerto Rican Council, and serves in the organizing committee of Miss Fiestas Patrias DuPage. PATRICIA MOTA President & CEO Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement As leader of HACE, Mota leads strategy, fundraising and development, leadership programs, and expanding impact on a national scale. Mota has served on various nonprofit boards and committees, most recently as a commissioner on the Illinois Hispanic Employment Plan Council. Mota earned a double bachelor's degree from Indiana University-Bloomington in Spanish and communication and culture, and a master's degree in public affairs from Indiana University's School of Public & Environmental Affairs.
