Entertainment Now | July 4 - 10, 2020 By Rachel Jones TV Media Everyday strength: It won't be long before Phil Keoghan ("The Ride," 2011) starts leading teams through another season of "The Amazing Race," but in the mean- time, the award-winning host has been busy sinking his teeth — or nails — into CBS's latest reality se- ries: "Tough as Nails." Premiering Wednesday, July 8, the show shines a spotlight on everyday people who have some of the world's most physically demand- ing jobs. The show's competitors, who pride themselves on their dirty hands and crisp paychecks, are given real job-site challenges and given a chance to prove their strength, agility, endurance and te- nacity. The series is set to run with 10 episodes, with one contender being eliminated at the end of each one. As always, the last man or woman standing is named the winner. But nobody actually exits the game for good, as those who are eliminated can still participate in team competitions right up until the last episode, and they can con- tinue to win additional prizes. While the world has seen a slew of physically challenging reality shows, "Tough as Nails" is techni- cally the first of its kind, plucking contestants right out of their real- world obstacle courses and having them strike one another down with their best all-in-a-day's-work performances. Indeed, the series gives a whole new meaning to the word "tough." More than anything, it pays tribute to those behind-the- scene heroes who have been working long, hard hours to pro- vide for their families. On-site and online casting calls for "Tough as Nails" began in November 2019 and culmi- nated with a worthy 12-member cast for the show's debut epi- sode. These tough guys and gals include a welder, farmer, dry- waller, scaffolder, gate agent, roofer, forestry tech, fisherman, ironworker, firefighter, deputy sheriff and a Marine Corps veter- an. "Tough as Nails" is actually in- spired by Keoghan's own family of hard laborers, who have been min- ers, builders and even wartime aeromechanics. Keoghan felt it was a fitting tribute to dedicate his next project to people who prefer calluses on their hands or sweaty coveralls over designer suits — af- ter all, it's these workers who keep the nation running. Keoghan executive-produces "Tough as Nails" with his wife, Louise, who has collaborated with him on many projects. As a host, Keoghan is best known for his Emmy-winning work on the American version of "The Amaz- ing Race," which is going on its 32nd season this year, after de- buting on CBS in 2001. Keoghan also hosts "National Geographic Explorer" and the adventure- themed podcast "BUCKiT with Phil Keoghan." Cry for justice: Showtime's new docuseries "Outcry" spins the gripping true tale of a high school football star who was wrongfully convicted of molesting a 4-year- old boy in 2014. After being exon- erated five years into his sentence, the now 24-year old Greg Kelley is trying to make the most of his newfound, and long-overdue, freedom. In the five-part documentary se- ries, which premieres Sunday, July 5, on Showtime, Emmy-winning director Pat Kondelis ("The Scheme," 2020) takes us back and outlines the series of events that led to Kelley's conviction and the subsequent quest for truth and jus- tice. After being ripped out of his Leander, Texas, home to pay for a crime he did not commit, the would-be high school senior was almost resigned to spending 25 years of his life behind bars with no chances of parole. But a groundswell of support from the community prompted authori- ties to reopen the investigation, review the prosecution's strate- gies and reexamine the convic- tion itself. "Outcry" twists and turns around the most surreal events, with Kondelis following the mo- tives and biases behind those who doled out this injustice and looking for the truth underneath. To avoid bias, the series rolls out both sides of the case, giving each brand of truth equal opportunity to be heard and documented. "Out- cry" is a testament to Kelley's plight during the most difficult five years of his life, his fate hanging in the balance until new evidence gave him his freedom back.
