We were going to take our regular Route 15 through Mt. Carmel, but when we got to Princeton, we had a detour, so our plans changed. We took Hwy 41 to I-64. At our rest stop on Route 1, we decided to take a new route and not get on the interstate. When we crossed over the Wabash River, since it was low, you could see the sandbars. Laura pulled up GPS on her phone. It speaks when we are near the place and tells us how much far- ther we have to go. But I like to use a road map and direct by following the road mark- ers. Both ways work really well. We took Route 1 into Car- mi, then Route 14 the rest of our trip to brink us into where Mom lives. The coun- tryside was mostly farm- land, all planted in corn. I do believe Pike County corn is higher. Lots of fields were just planted and we passed one farmer plowing up his field to plant. The day was hot enough to use the air conditioner. The view outside the windows was great when you came into the three towns along this route. They were Carmi, McLeansboro and Benton, which were large towns, but spread out, not packed into one area. We believe we cut our time by a half hour or so as we took this new way. Our old route took us through six towns. Some were really small, but scenic also. When we got to Mom's place, we got her things in- side. She was so worn out from the pleasant ride of new scenery that she final- ly fell asleep and then, she was able to eat something as we waited for George and Deby. They were at a birth- day party for Jacari, where they had pizza and birthday ice cream cake. They also watched him and his friends play one-on-one basketball. On Sunday, he was to go fishing with Uncle Ethan. We all rested up and talked for awhile. Then we start- ed for home. Since this was such a gorgeous day and the truck was running great, we stopped at a drive-up eating place. As we ate, we were al- so making plans on where to go next. With several di- rections, we all decided on Route 37 to Route 50. This was mostly farmland, but had more houses along the way and most of the towns were or near the route, such as Salem, Flora, Clay City, Olney and Lawrenceville. Some towns were extend- ed, with businesses on the highway to make it easier on the town to not have all that traffic drive through a busy business area. Also all along this route, there are several lakes for fish- ing and wildlife. When we crossed the Wabash River into Vincennes, we stayed on Route 50 into Washing- ton, then took Hwy 57 into Petersburg, and Hwy 61 in- to Winslow. The whole day was great with sunshine. As the sun set, the temp got cooler as the Sunday morn- ing rain was on its way from the north. I know I had a great time on this road trip. I want to take another one soon, but it will have to be awhile longer. I hope you all enjoyed hearing about our trip and it may have sounded like there wasn't too much to see. But if only to see fields planted in corn, crossing over the rivers and streams, seeing the water levels, passing through towns, seeing busi- nesses and beautiful yards, then you have had a great road trip, something new to see. Sunday morning, Norm started the digging to fix the water leak that hap- pened before we left town on Saturday at the outside faucet. He had it all dug out when I got up and as I sat there with my first cup of coffee, we decided to go to Home Depot to get the need- ed items to fix our leak. As we were on our way, we al- so had a plan to buy a new kitchen faucet because the other one had been leak- ing. This was a good time to replace it while the water was off. So, we got what was needed and the plug worked on the outside pipe. Howev- er, when we were about to hook up the water lines to the new faucet, we had to go back to Home Depot to get longer lines. Back home again and soon we had wa- ter in the house again with no leaks. The kitchen faucet extends up and then crooks over the sink. It really looks great and now or later, the bathroom sink faucet needs replaced. The hole outside was filled in and we are waiting for the rain to pack it down so we can put the stone back. When all was do- ne and the water lines were flushed, Norm got to take a needed shower to get all the clay dirt off. The dog was happy to get fresh water and I got to wash the dishes with our new fangled faucet. I have had a few people ask about the Winslow Riv- erside Flea Market. The Li- ons decided last year not to hold the flea market this year due to lack of atten- dance by customers and vendors. We do have some events planned, but with the virus and social distancing, plans will also have to be worked out. More informa- tion to come later. On Monday, June 15, Norm and I took Vernon and Dixie out to eat at a restaurant in Princeton. So- cial distancing was in place and the food of fish, steak and pot roast was fixed just right for our taste buds. We also took the long way home by way of Hwy 41 to Hwy 68 to Hwy 57 and into Oakland City to drop off Dixie. Her front yard is beginning to have potted plants put in and they look great with col- or. We then took Hwy 57 past the skeletons, who were out as a family bike riding with Mom, Dad and youngster. The other set up was fishing from the boat. We then went up to Sugar Ridge Road and into Twin Pits, where I hav- en't seen the turtles sunning on the tree stumps. Then we drove into Winslow to let Vernon out at his house. We all had a relaxing time together and hope it won't be so long until our next eat out. Winslow and Petersburg ball leagues have started, so if you would like to enjoy a game or two, then get in touch with a coach or play- er to find out the dates and times. My sister, Terri Ann, was released from the hospi- tal on Monday, June 22 and then the outpatient therapy will start. When they start- ed the in-hospital therapy, she was really sore, but with more therapy, she may out- run me. German American Bank in Petersburg has had drive- up windows to do transac- tions, but you can now go in- side. Only a few people are let in at a time. Norm is hap- py to hear this because the pennies are overflowing and the windows are okay, but the welcome of the inside is more comfortable. We also like the one-on-one with the cashiers. I looked outside and saw the black-eyed Susans are in bloom. I forgot, I guess be- cause it's a large plant, but the tall stemmed white clus- ter of bells with pointy green leaves at the base have been in bloom for weeks in sever- al yards. I believe it's called and Adam and Eve plant. Our Winslow Lions met Thursday, June 18. To keep our distance, the kitchen was again too small, so we met in the big banquet room as the other room had the Winslow Park Board meet- ing. Anyway, we are dis- cussing our plans with help from the Winslow Ameri- can Legion to serve break- fast at the Park and Millers Field, and lunch at the Park for Clog the Patoka on July 11. Plus there will be supper served by the American Le- gion Sons later in the eve- ning. The Kayak Mafia ex- pects to have a bigger crowd than last year. We all hope the Patoka River comes up a lot more than right now be- cause you can see the tree debris and the water level is quite low. Rain is in the fore- cast. Our Winslow Lions are roaring loud to welcome our new Lion Tammy En- glish, who has helped in oth- er events and decided to join this fine group to serve our community. Welcome, Lion Tammy.
