On Monday morning at 8 am, a refrigerated truck filled with 40,000 pounds of Russet potatoes rolled into the Shelby Farm and Garden Center's parking lot in Shelby, traveling 2,500- miles. A few weeks ago, the Charlotte Observer ran a story stating that potatoes were available in Wash- ington. The state raises potatoes for the restaurant industry and because of the current downturn in the restaurant business, there is no market for large quanti- ties of potatoes. Doug Sharp, co-founder of CCPP, saw an opportu- nity to help feed hungry peo- ple, with a special emphasis on helping those affected by the Coronavirus. But, Sharp was not alone in this effort. Cleveland County Po- tato Project volunteers co- ordinated the project. Jack Hamrick, long-time potato project supporter and retired surgeon led the fundraising. An email went out to his supporters soliciting funds. And two weeks later, the or- phaned Russet potatoes had found a new home in Cleve- land County, NC. And, that was when the real work began. Volunteers gathered bright and early Monday morning to unload the truck, which took about an hour. And before you know it, those potatoes will be on the plates of people in the community needing food for themselves and their families, thanks to a story in the Observer and Cleveland County residents intent of feeding the hungry, one po- tato at a time. For more information on the CCPP, call 704-472- 5128. CCPP receives 40,000 pounds of Russet potatoes A truck filled with potatoes was delivered to Cleveland County Potato Project on May 8.
