As an architect serving families who have
gone through this trauma in the Tubbs and
Camp Fires, I have admired their incredible,
unbreakable spirit as they skillfully navigate
the rebuilding process with a vision of their
family's future in mind. My first task is to
listen with care so that I can tactfully guide
discussions on ways to rebuild and upgrade
from previous structures. My second task is
to do everything I can to defend their new
home from the threat of fire so they can feel
secure at home again.
The good news is that the California
Residential Code (CRC) demands much
better fire-resistant design than previous
decades. The bad news is that there is no
fire-proof construction. So, where do we
