population studies, observing nesting ter-
rapins and their habitats, enhancing their
habitats with turtle gardens, and educating
others about their biology and life history.
Project Terrapin also promotes their conser-
vation using current scientific information
through research and by supporting other
organizations that promote conservation.
What You Can Do:
• If driving on roadways adjacent to marsh
areas during the months of May, June, or
July, drive slowly. Adult female terrapins
may be crossing to nest.
• Be careful if boating and/or using personal
watercraft in marsh areas and try to avoid
submerged aquatic vegetation beds.
• If using commercial-style crab pots, use
bycatch reduction devices (turtle exclud-
ers). Contact MATES Project Terrapin to
acquire them.
• Do not take terrapins from the wild. In
New Jersey, there are regulations prevent-
ing turtle capture.
• Do not support the online turtle industry.
Hatchling sellers are a source of future
depletion of the species.
• If you live in an area with terrapins,
consider a turtle garden. Visit www.
projectterrapin.org for more information.
Information courtesy of Project Terrapin. You
can help support Project Terrapin by providing
volunteer research time on field projects, donat-
ing supplies and materials necessary for con-
servation projects, and conducting surveys and
education programs. For more information, visit
www.projectterrapin.org, email projectterrapin@
gmail.com, or call (609) 978-8439. You can also
follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
If you find an injured, dying, or dead terrapin
on land, contact Project Terrapin. Their eggs may
still be able to hatch under proper care.
Other organizations that support terrapins
are the Diamondback Terrapin Working Group
at The Wetlands Institute (www.dtwg.org or

terrapin-conservation) and the Conserve Wildlife
Foundation of NJ (www.conservewildlifenj.org).
