Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 received no postcards this week. Winslow Patoka River is real low be- cause I can see trees that have fallen and large branches sticking up from the water. We did have rain all day Tuesday that came into our area from the tropical storm in the Gulf. There were winds of 20 -30 mph that also last- ed all day. It was so strong, it took out a big portion of the tree next to the Lamb's house, the part that covered the center of their street. This storm cooled things down for only a few hours, then the humidity was back until Thursday, June 11, when the windows flew open again with a high of 83, but no high humidity. Our house plants are loving the outside under the shade tree and I saw that the day lil- ies are in bloom. I like to see the different colors of the Bachelor But- tons, and some other old and new flow- ers in Janie's yard. Mrs. Erwin has a big bunny in her yard and I saw a row of tulips on the front door. Lots of oth- er yards have different flowers grow- ing and you will just have to take a ride around Winslow and see all the pret- ties. Or you could take a ride around your neighborhood and you might see some beautiful yards that you adore. The squirrels are still around and one must be young because we have seen small clumps of leaves on the ground under the tree. We haven't seen the chipmunk, but he may be hiding or is too shy to come out. The Hwy. 57 skeletons were posed as a dad and a child mowing during the week of June 1-6. During the week of June 7-13, the family of Mom, Dad and child were all on bicycles. I like to see them each week and it puts a big smile on my face. We have a new, to us, truck. It's an Avalanche that we have been do- ing some needed repairs to. This past week, a brake line was fixed. Now, we feel safer with that fixed. Yes, we stop much easier, so thanks, Pat, for your work and thanks, Vernon, for a ride. Mom likes to go out for a ride and get ice cream, so almost every day, we have seen more of the Winslow areas, like Pike State Forest, which has sev- eral areas of trees taken down. It really looks bare. The fire tower is still stand- ing with a barbed wire fence around it and the steps are taken out. We also traveled Winslow-Cato Road and kept an eye open for deer. We took a Sunday drive to Washington, by way of Hwy 57. However, coming back, we took I-69 to Oakland City, then Hwy 64 into Princ- eton. One day, we drove to Buckskin and everywhere we went, Mom just took in the scenery. Some of the plac- es we went, she told us where we were. Instead of just riding around, we also stopped at Junie Bees or Dairy Queen for ice cream or shakes. The scenery on the backroads is pleasant to see and you don't have to be in a hurry to get somewhere. Sometimes, you see some- thing you like that wasn't there before. The White River and the Patoka River on I-69 were up to the rims and almost overflowing. My sister, Terri Ann, couldn't come and stay this past week because she couldn't walk. Now, she is in the re- hab part of Daviess County Hospital for another two weeks. Laura gives us an update on her as Laura works there at night. On Saturday, June 13, Mom is going back home and if all works out, Norm and I have taken her over there instead of George and Deby making the trip. Mom loves to ride in the Avalanche. She and I can both get into this one easier and we can all ride together. The Winslow town workers have been in some grimy mud and some sticky grass as the clothes needed a little more washing than usual. How- ever, the town looks great for passers- by traveling through town. In Indiana, we are all in Stage 4, but please, if you can, wear those masks and social distancing is still in place. There are a lot more restaurants that have 75 percent seating. I saw that the empty parking lot at Denny's in Oak- land City had some vehicle. It's nice to see that again. Zoos and museums are open also. Have you heard that on July 1, you cannot talk or text or have your phone in your hand while driving or at a stop light. Lots of people are on their phones while driving and I never liked that, but I guess that call is more im- portant than handling your vehicle . I guess I'm an old person set in her ways, but with the phone, loud kids, other passengers or music, you still have to watch the road for animals, slowed ve- hicles, other drivers and debris. You should be concentrating on the road. I thought I had this star in the birth- day list, but a belated Happy Birthday to Amy Wren on June 11. She turned 44 and she loved the song I sang to her. My brother, George, was at a truck stop in Memphis, Ind., and got to visit with cousin Don, who doesn't live too far from that truck stop. They both had a great visit and loved catching up with the family. Father's Day is June 21, so do some- thing or make something for dear old Dad. Growing up, we went together and got dad a shirt and tie combo or a box of King Edward cigars, made a cake and his favorite food. What your dad would really like is to be told, "I love you, Dad." I guess I have talked your head off, so the lights are about to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends, if only to listen. Slow down and see all the wonders in your neck of the woods. Take time out to listen to dif- ferent birds singing. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. It really helps the spirit. Hap- py Father's Day. To enter the Birthday Club, email your name, ad- dress, phone number and birthdate to birthdayclub@ pressdispatch.net. Only the person's name, town and birthday will appear in the paper.
