David was born February 28, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Oscar Mitchell and Creola McKinney Mitchell. He retired from Robbins Brick and Block after over twenty-years of service. David was a deacon at the Pentecostal Apostolic Church of Christ in Shelby and enjoyed playing the gui- tar during the worship ser- vices. He was dedicated to his family and to his faith in God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Mitchell: six brothers, Oscar, Rufus, Henry, Bobby, Odell and John Mitchell and sister, Carrie Mitchell Smith. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of thirty-six years, Lovie McCoy Mitchell; daughters, Tina McCoy of Forest City and Latonya McCoy of the home; sons, Marcus Mitchell (Elizabeth) of Shelby, Hugh McCoy of West Virginia, David McCoy of Forest City and Deondray McCoy of the home. He is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Mitchell of Kings Mountain and Edna Mae Mitchell of Providence, Rhode Island; twenty-two grandchildren and sixteen great-grand- children. The family also acknowledges his lifelong friends, William Ross, and Ollie Barksdale. The funeral service was conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Bishop James Wiley, and Bishop Willie Mitchell officiating. The fam- ily received friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with arrange- ments. LORETTA THOMAS BREWTON Minister Loretta Thomas Brewton, 76, of 402 Hobbs Ave. Shelby, NC passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at her residence. She was born in Cleveland County, NC on July 31, 1943 to the late Ralph Buster Thomas and Dorethea McCombs Thomas. Minister Brewton was retired from Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Remaining active, she worked as a Foster Grandparent with Cleveland County Schools for a number of years. She was an Ordained Minister and had Compassion and Concerns for everyone she came in contact with. She used her Gift of service for the Lord to Always check on people and to make sure they were Always ok and Always cooked for people which was her True Passion. She loved her Grandchildren and also Enjoyed Spending time with them. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Gertie Taylor McCombs; her broth- er, Ralph James Thomas; sisters, Veronica Thomas and Carrie Thomas Battle; grandson, Jashawn Travis Brewton and step-son, Carl Dean Boykins. She leaves to Cherish Fond Memories to her chil- dren, Scott Brewton, Trisa Carpenter and Shawn Brewton all of Shelby; her sisters, Betty Glover, Mattie Moore, Willie Mae Elmore and Carolyn Haynes all of Shelby; grandchil- dren, Ashley Thompson, La'Kesha Thompson, Marquise Brewton, Tyler Carpenter, Arey Brewton, David Brewton, Dezden Brewton, Michael Little, Latosha Boykins, Christian Boykins and Carlos Boykins; aunts, Jennie Lee James of Augusta, GA and Ailean McCombs of Shelby; for- mer husband whom she remained close to, Willie Brewton of Shelby; special friends, Gwen Lawrence, Elsie McDowell and Bertha Boykins and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service for Minister Brewton was pri- vate. A viewing was held on Friday, June 5, 2020. Burial was at Sunset Cemetery. JEFFERY LEE SCHRUM Cherryville: Jeffery Lee Schrum, 62, passed away June 4, 2020, at home peacefully with family by his side after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 23, 1958, in Bellaire, OH. He graduated from Millington High School in Millington, TN, in 1976. He was the proud owner of Cherry Auto Paint and Body in Cherryville, N.C. He was also an accomplished mem- ber of the Professional Bowlers Association with 22 years as a pro. He com- peted on the regional and national level, with many ABC/USBA Association titles and countless perfect 300 games. Jeff attended the First United Methodist Church in Cherryville. He is preceded in death by his father Franklin Delano Schrum, Sr. and father-in- law, Jack Conaway, Sr. Jeff is survived and remembered by his wife of 30 years, Sherri; his daugh- ters, Jennifer Schrum (Dave Schaub) of Pickerington, Ohio and Janna Forquer (Dr. Jonathan Forquer) of Lancaster, Ohio; his grand- children, Graham and Keegan Forquer, Ellison and Finley Schaub; his moth- er, Naomi (Howard Smith) Schrum of St. Clairsville, Ohio; his sisters, Judy (Larry) Gautschi of St. Clairsville, Ohio and Linda (Jason Blair) Schrum of Estero, FL; his brothers Franklin (Marilyn) Schrum Jr., of Findlay, OH and James (Dana) Schrum, of St. Clairsville, OH and many other loving fam- ily members and countless friends. He was the proud owner of Cherry Auto Paint and Body in Cherryville, N.C. He was also an accomplished member of the Professional Bowlers Association with 22 years as a pro. WILLIAM ROSCOE "CHAMP" CHAMPION William Roscoe "Champ" Champion, age 75, of Mooresboro, died Friday, June 5, 2020 at Willow Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. William was born October 7, 1944 in Rutherford County to the late Roscoe Pinkney Champion and Julia Lovada Hood Champion. He worked in textiles most of his life and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Poteat. Those left to cherish his memory includes sons, Billy Eugene Champion (Barbara Kay) of Forest City, William Christopher Champion (Janet) of Ellenboro and Timothy Rodrick Champion (Julie) of Gilkey; daugh- ters, Glenda Diane Sheldon (Bernard) of Forest City and Mary Lovada Taylor (Ken) of Mooresboro; sister, Debra Hoyle (Roger) of Shiloh; brother, Donald Champion (Lisa) of Boiling Springs, SC; eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2020 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ricky Poteat officiating. A native of Cumberland County, NJ, he was the son of the late Ronald and Phyllis Holt Wheat. Carl served in the US Navy, work many years as a USPS Carrier, and will be remembered as a patriotic and family man.
