OUTDOOR UTDOOR TRUTHS RUTHS July will mark my seventeenth year of doing this column. It has been a very satisfying and life-altering period of time. It all started when I bought an ad in two different newspapers for an event that was taking place. Both left my offi ce with my fi rst attempt at Outdoor Truths promis- ing me they would sporadically run the article as space became available. Each paper has carried the column ever since and has only rarely missed putting it in their publication. What began with two newspapers is now in several newspapers as well as some regional magazines and on many websites. I reminisce not to boast but to tell you how blessed I have been through these many years. Those blessings have come from several avenues. First, I have had the wonderful privilege of being a part of some great home-town newspapers and blue-collar hunting and fi shing magazines. The men and women who make up these publications understand a great seg- ment of their readers are hunters, fi shermen (or women), and believers in God. We may have different doctrinal beliefs, and some may not even be totally sure about this church thing, and Christians, and even Jesus. But what we are all sure about, is Someone greater than man created this earth that we get to play in every time we hunt or fi sh. Our local newspapers at times take a lot of criticism but they also bring you the good stuff that many folks in bigger cities never get. Another blessing that has thrilled my soul is when you tell me about how some story I have written caused you to remember a special outdoor time in your life with a father, mother, or friend. These stories come just at the right time and make me feel so honored to have had a part of bringing back these precious memories. And lastly, these seventeen years have made me more sensitive to what creation has to say about God. It was a few years ago, I realized when Jesus started his ministry here on earth, and he went looking for some good men who he would make his disciples, the fi rst place he went was to the lake. There he found Peter and his brother Andrew and made them "fi shers of men." Many fi shermen I know might not consider themselves disciple material, but God must think differently. I've learned God's provision is illustrated by the sparrow and the lily, his care by the sheep, and his power in our life by his ability to speak peace to the winds and the waves. All outdoor illustrations. But more than this, I am more convinced than ever that he knows your name, cares for you immensely, and hurts when you hurt. If I began to count my blessings there is no doubt my time with you each week would be at the top. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is asking anglers fi shing on Lake Norman to release any blue-tagged hybrid striped bass they catch. Tagged fi sh are easily identifi able with the blue tag in the dorsal area (the top of the fi sh near the spines) and a thin antenna protruding from the side of the body. They are part of a study of hybrid striped bass, also known as Bodie bass, that agency biologists recently began to track the fi sh's movements throughout the reservoir, particularly in the late summer months when water temperatures are high and dissolved oxygen levels in certain areas of the reservoir are low. Anglers should release these fi sh immediately. Since 2016, the Commission has been studying harvest of hybrid striped bass at Lake Norman and fi sh in that study were implanted with an orange tag. Anglers collecting fi sh with orange tags are still advised to remove that tag and call the phone number on the tag. For more information about Bodie bass/hybrid striped bass, visit the Commission's hybrid striped bass page. For more information about fi shing in North Carolina, visit the fi shing page. Due to the COVID-19 virus, the sales counter at the Wildlife Commission's headquarters in Raleigh is closed. We encourage the public to visit our website, www.ncwildlife.org, to purchase fi shing, trapping and hunting licenses and to renew a vessel registration. The Commission's License, Vessel Registration Centers are open from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Wildlife Commission Asks Lake Norman Anglers to Release Any Blue-Tagged Hybrid Striped Bass Article provided by: ncwildlife.org As North Carolinians prepare for hurricane season, offi cials with the North Carolina Division of Public Health caution you not to use gasoline-powered generators or tools, outdoor grills, and camp stoves in enclosed spaces. These devises should be used outside only and at least 20 feet away from windows, doors and air vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced whenever fuel is burned. In an enclosed space, such as a home, garage, car, or camper, carbon monoxide can build up to deadly levels quickly. Even low levels of carbon monoxide can cause dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headaches, confusion or fainting. If you are experiencing these symptoms, get to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Carbon monoxide can be deadly within minutes. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal to anyone, especially children, pregnant women, older adults and/ or those with chronic illness. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from carbon monoxide poisoning before ever becoming aware of their symptoms. To stay safe: • Do not use gasoline- powered tools, generators, or engines in enclosed or even partially enclosed spaces. Use them outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and air vents. • Do not use charcoal grills or propane stoves indoors, even in a fi replace. • Never use the stove or other gas appliances to heat your home. • Do not idle your car, truck, or other vehicle in the garage, even if the garage door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly in the garage and living area of your home. • Install and maintain a carbon monoxide alarm in your home, preferably one for each level of your home. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. • Keep rooms well ventilated. When buying a generator, make sure to buy or use the correct extension cord to allow the generator to be placed outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and air vents, and still have enough power to work correctly. For fuel- burning devices, read and follow instructions carefully, use the proper fuel and make sure there is enough air for ventilation and fuel burning. If you experience symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning including dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headaches, confusion or fainting, get to fresh air immediately and seek medical care.
