The family meeting was at 1750 New Prospect Church Road, Shelby. JIMMY EUGENE HINSON Cherryville - Mr. Jimmy Eugene Hinson, 73, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at his residence. Jimmy was born in Cleveland County, NC on March 19, 1947 a son of the late Palmer Hinson and Bertie Meredith Hinson. He was retired from the City of Cherryville Public Works Department. Jimmy served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard and was a member of the Cherryville American Legion Post 100. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Judy Hinson of the home; a daughter, Joy Cash and husband Bobby of Cherryville; a son Jerry Hinson and wife Sarah of Mill Spring, NC; three grandchildren, Cain and Camryn Cash and Ava Hinson and a sister, Agnes Martin of Gastonia. A private memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church in Cherryville with the Rev. Jerry Lail officiating. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church 201 N. JOHN HARVEY HARDY III John Harvey Hardy III (Jay), age 73 of Cherryville passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Caromont Regional Medical Center. He was born November 9, 1946 in Covington, VA to the late John Harvey Hardy Jr. and Helen Smith Hardy. Jay was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, earning several med- als, before being hon- orably discharged as a Captain. He then attended Hampton University graduating Magna Cum Laude in account- ing. Jay became a licensed Certified Public Accountant with a highly successful finan- cial career until he retired. Jay was a loving and caring him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Angela Putman. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of forty-one years, Karen McCombs Putman; daughter, Brandy Morrison of Ellenboro; son, Brad Putman (Renee) of Ellenboro; two sisters, Debbie Hicks (Michael) of Ellenboro and Lisa Travis (David) of Shelby and brother, Phillip Putman of Bostic. He is also survived by eight grandchil- dren, Haley Finney, Emily Finney, Blake Morrison, Gage Morrison, Grayson Morrison, Joe Joe Putman, Jace Putman and Jayden Putman. The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Robert Lane offi- ciating. Interment followed at Gannt's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. An online guest registry is available at www.harrelsonfu- neralhome.com NANCY DEGREE SLOAN Mrs. Nancy Degree Sloan, 91, of Shelby, NC passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020 at Peak Resources in Gastonia, NC. She was born in Cleveland County, NC on March 6, 1929 to the late Paul Degree, Sr. and May Bell Degree Woods. Mrs. Sloan was a longtime member of Hopewell Baptist Church where she formerly sang on the Hymn Choir. She enjoyed quilting and growing flowers. She will be remem- bered for her stern but kind- hearted disposition and her love for her children and grandchildren and concern for other people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Lee Sloan; a son, Micheal Lee Sloan; brothers, Paul Degree, Jr., R.V. Degree, Theodore Degree, Virgil Lee Degree and Roscoe "Bill" Degree and two sisters, Rosetta Charles and Tishia Mae Degree. Left to cherish her mem- ory are her four children, Joeann Sloan of Gastonia, NC, Kathy Sloan, Daniel Ray Sloan (Lynda) and Sammy Lee Sloan all of Shelby; one sister, Josephine Degree of Lawndale, NC; a sister-in-law, Katherine Sloan of Detroit, MI; twelve grandchildren; twenty- five great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; close and special friend, Elease Hamilton and a host of nieces, nephews, other rela- tives and friends. Due to recent coronavirus state guidelines limiting the STEVE WARDELL MILLER Mr. Steve Wardell Miller, 60, of 1305 Greer Street Shelby, NC passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby. He was born on December 19, 1959 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Willie Miller and Barbara Jane Jeffries Miller. Steve was a retired captain of the Shelby Fire and Rescue Department after 25 years of service. Steve was always a man of strength, courage, and diligence, never meeting a stranger. Often you could find him at the Goodwill sparking up a conversation. The love he had for his wife, children, and family was a force that could never be broken. He was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Barbara Miller, and his brother Willie Miller Jr. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Doris Miller, who remained by his side until his passing; son Steven Miller of Charlotte, NC; daughters Tamerriell Hogue (Charles) of Belmont, NC; Quanterra, Shanterra, Tysherra, of the home; Adrain Hunt of Salisbury, NC; granddaugh- ters Tarayjah Hoey-Gordon (Clayton) of Greensboro, NC; Taiylor Hoey of Belmont, NC; sisters Karen Partlow and Sandra Brooks of Shelby, NC; brother Jeffrey Miller (Latoshia) of Shelby, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, close friends, and beloved co-workers. Enloe Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 21, 2020 from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Burial took place at Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. KIM PUTNAM Kim Putman, age 58, of Ellenboro, died Monday, May 18, 2020 at his residence. Kim was born October 26, 1961 in Rutherford County to the late Charles Willis Putman and Mildred Dycus Putman. He worked at AGI for over 30 years before retirement and attended Gantt's Grove Baptist Church. Kim was known in the community as the "Gun Man." He enjoyed repairing and building bicycles for his grandkids and hunting. LINDA GERALDINE MABRY Linda Geraldine Mabry, 72, of Shelby, NC, passed away on May 21, 2020 at her home. She was born in Roberson County, NC, to the late Harry David and Rennice Barton Hepler and was pre- ceded in death by a sister, Brenda Tyree and a brother Wayne Hepler. RACHEL LOUISE NEAL HOLCOMB Rachel Louise Neal Holcomb, age 83 died on Friday, May 22, 2020 at Hospice Wendover. Born in Clearwater Florida on April 14, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Jacob (J.D.) Dennis and Pansy Lee McGee Neal. Rachel attended El Bethel United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. In addition to her parents, Rachel is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh "Neil" Holcomb Sr.; a sister, Lynda Darnell Holcomb; a brother, husband, father, brother, and uncle. He loved to whittle, and go camping and fishing with his children. Later in life, he continued to fish and spend time in his workshop. Jay loved spending time with his wife and family. It is no secret to those of us that loved Jay, there were two special ladies in his life that also helped him through pain and sickness for many years. We are sure Lucy and Jax met you at the gates of heaven in a joyous reunion, with exuber- ant barking and euphoric tail wagging. May there be end- less walks through the fields of heaven. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Dorothy "Kay" South Hardy; son John Harvey Hardy IV of Roanoke, VA; daughter Melissa Hardy Altman (David) of Goodview, VA; grandchil- dren, Luke, Hope, and Lauren Altman; stepson Lee Collins of Houston, TX; stepdaugh- ter, Christie Martin (Matthew); step grandchildren, Stella and Jasmine Martin; sib- lings, Michael Hardy (Marcia) and Martha Huffman, all of Shellman Bluff, GA; aunt Mary Hardy O'Neill of Covington, VA; nieces, nephews and many other family members. VERA LEE JACKSON CROCKER LOGAN WINKFIELD Vera Lee Jackson Crocker Logan Winkfield was a woman who was as mighty as her name. Following a near death experience as a young child, Vera was propelled into a life of selflessness and count- less charitable acts. Vera had an unforgettable impact on anyone she encountered, we thank God he blessed us with her life. Vera gave from her heart with a loving spirit and never missed an opportu- nity to make a family member or friend feel special. Vera treated everyone equally and instilled that in her family. She believed that anyone, no mat- ter their background, could be a test from God; so she treated them as such. Mrs. Vera Logan Winkfield was born on March 14, 1934 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Thomas and Addie Bell Jackson. Vera transi- tioned to her heavenly home on Thursday May 7, 2020 at her residence in Grover, NC. Vera was a graduate of Compact High School. She was a faithful member of Long Branch Baptist Church, Grover NC. She retired from Kings Mountain District Schools where she was employed at Grover Elementary school as Head-start teacher. She was a leader of the 4-H Club and participated in the Home Demonstration club and the Mary Bell Circle. Dennis Neal. Guest Registry is available at www.cecilmburtonfuneral- home.com. GLEN DONALD "DON" BRIGHT JR. Glen Donald "Don" Bright Jr., age 68, died Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Atrium Health- Cleveland. Born in Cleveland County on December 3, 1951 he was the son of the late Glen Donald Bright Sr. and Elissa McKee Bright. Don was a standout baseball player for Shelby High who went to play with Western Carolina before being drafted to play Major League Baseball as a pitcher with the Texas Rangers. He returned to Shelby and worked for Duke Energy, Liberty Insurance, Western-Southern Life Insurance, Doran Mill Company, and finally retired from Copeland Corporation. In retirement he enjoyed golf, and participated in many tour- naments. Of Don's accom- plishments in life, his children and grandchildren were his proudest. Don is survived by one son Hasson Bright and fiance Kimberly Clark, one daughter Heather Sadler and husband Matthew, all of Shelby, one brother, Mike Bright and wife Jill of Charleston, SC, eight grandchildren; Kaleb, Olive, Sam, Will, Jackson, Isabella, Remi, and Iliana as well as one niece, Ariel Lesmerises, and three nephews Ashby Ware, Justin Bright and Conner Bright and his former wife Helen Patterson. Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, May 29, 2020 at Landmark Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Davis officiat- ing. Those who wish to spend time with Don are welcome in the funeral home from 9:30 am until 12:00 pm on Friday morn- ing prior to the service; he will also lie in state at the church from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
