Page 8 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, May 21-May 27, 2020 Honoring Veterans May 23 by Flagging Their Graves Honoring the Graves of Our Veterans The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) Squadron 82 has a large project for this Memorial Day. Squadron 82 is placing US Flags on the graves of 1,100 veter- ans buried at Sunset, Eastside, and Webb Memorial cemeteries. Also, they will help place fl ags along the roadways at Cleveland Memorial Cemetery. Help Place the Flags on the Graves of Veterans During April, SAL identifi ed where veterans graves are at the three cemeteries. They have sectional maps of each cem- etery to mark the location of a veteran's grave They need your help to place the fl ags on the graves this Thursday. • Thurs., May 21 start at 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Cleveland Memorial, College Ave., Shelby. • Sat., May 23 start at 10 am until about noon at Sunset Cemetery, Martin St., Shelby. • Sat., May 23 start at 11 am until about 11:45 at Webb Memorial, Eaves Rd., Shelby. At 10:00 am on Saturday, May 23, there will be a ceremony at Sunset Cemetery to explain why the SAL is honoring the veterans by placing a fl ag on their grave. They have a com- bined color guard of the American Legion and SAL members and a rifl e squad. City of Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony will speak, and the rifl e squad will give a rifl e salute and fi nish with the playing of taps. At that time, groups will go to different sec- tions of the cemetery to place the fl ags on the graves. The same ceremony will be repeated at Webb Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 23. Social distancing was practiced. There was plenty of room for 100 vol- unteers. A donation of $10.00 pays for one hour of profes- sional weed removal.
