They were blessed with two chil- dren and one grandson. During his life, he was an extremely devoted husband and father. Howard also was a great provider and protec- tor of his family; working over 28 years with PPG Industries before retiring. Later in life, Howard became a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Forest City, NC where he worked faithfully to further the ministry. Known for his outgoing personality, he truly "never met a stranger." He enjoyed traveling, golf and photography. One of his favorite pastimes was com- pleting crossword puzzles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Brooks Edwards and two brothers, William Morgan Edwards Jr. and Van Wyck Edwards. Left to cherish his memory are his children, La Vondra Farquharson of Charlotte, NC and Dr. H. Jamaal Edwards of Shelby, NC; one grand- son, William Farquharson of Charlotte, NC and a host of family and friends. Due to recent coronavirus state guidelines limiting the size of gatherings, the ser- vice for Mr. Edwards will be private. He was viewed on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Shiloh Baptist Church from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM with a reception of friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church. The family met at 611 Dellinger Road Shelby, NC. NELLIE WHETSTINE BRIDGES Nellie (Nell) Whetstine Bridges (96) was born in Grover, NC to the late Victor and Willie Whetstine on March 1, 1924. She left us on May 11, 2020 to rejoin her husband of over 50 years, Jasper Fred Bridges, Sr., her son, Jasper (Jack) Fred Bridges, Jr., grandson, Sammy Fred Bridges, Sr., and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Nicole Bridges. Also waiting for her were her brothers, Clarence Whetstine, Jack Whetstine, Clyde Whetstine, Bill Whetstine and their wives, Geneva, Dot, Mildred and Thelma along with many, many very special friends and family. Truly, what a day of rejoicing that was! Nell is survived by her daughters, Mary Bridges Lingerfeldt, Vicki Bridges Carter, and Barbara Bridges, sons-in-law Roscoe Lingerfeldt and Jimmy Carter, and daughter-in- law, Maxine Bridges as well as her honorary daughter, Diana Quesenberry. MAX FRANKLIN FRISBEE Casar: Max Franklin Frisbee, age 62, of Casar, died Monday, May 4, 2020. Max was born March 25, 1958 in Buncombe County to Glenn Frisbee and the late Wilda Ballew Frisbee who died in 2016; he was a resi- dent of Casar for the past 15 years. Max had Cerebral Palsy and was the first per- son on crutches to graduate from Erwin High School. He retired from Square D after 29 yrs. of service. Max was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a faithful Christian. Surviving in addition to his father, are his wife of 31 years, Sheree Fender Frisbee; sons, Joseph and Samuel Frisbee; sisters, Lillian "Sissy" Cox and hus- band Danny, and Leisa Frisbee; brothers, Melvin Frisbee and wife Wendy, and Brian and Brandon Frisbee; three grandchil- dren, Scarlette, Kira, and Jameson. HOWARD ROGER EDWARDS Mr. Howard Roger Edwards, 72, of Shelby, NC passed away on Thursday May 7, 2020 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. He was born in Gaston County, NC on January 29, 1948 to the late William Morgan Edwards and Clarice Cornwell Edwards. The youngest of three brothers, Howard was reared in Cherryville, NC and gradu- ated from John Chavis High School with the distinction of salutatorian of his class. During his teenage years in Cherryville, he was an out- standing pitcher for one of the first integrated base- ball leagues and after high school, he attended NC A&T University. BELTON "GARY" LANIER Mooresboro: Belton "Gary" Lanier, 58, died Monday, May 11, 2020, at his home. A native of Lincoln County, he is the son of Roy Lanier of Maiden, and the late Iva Frances Keever. Gary worked as a painter for many years. In addition his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sheri Lanier; and brother, Robert Ledwell. In addition to his father, he is survived by his son, Brandon Lanier and fiancée Jennifer Poteat of Shelby; brother, Michael Keever of Cherryville; grandson, Matthew Lanier; and neph- ew, Joshua Keever. Funeral services will remain private to the family. GERALD AMOS LANIER Gerald Amos Lanier, age 24 of Kings Mountain, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He is survived by his girl- friend, Cheyenne Reedy, a daughter, Aubree'Ella Lanier, his parents, Christina Smith and husband Don, grandparents, Paul Lanier and wife Tracy, three sisters, Courtney Lanier, Morgan Lanier and fiancé Joshua Speicher and their son, Jackson Speicher, and Jayda McAbee, a brother, James Carroll Jr. and wife Bethany Sisk, his biological father, Gerald McAbee, three aunts, Gina Short and husband David, Paula Creighton, Stephanie Champion and husband Andy, an uncle, Anthony Pruitt and wife Hope, a great uncle, Jackie Lanier, cousins, Kayla Wells and Brandon Gladden along with other numerous cous- ins, and friends. Born November 13, 1995 in Gaston County, Gerald was preceded in death by a daughter, Ava Lanier and a grandmother, Darlene Fink. Gerald enjoyed his Honda cars, playing video games, and spending time with his family and friends, especially playing with his daughter. DAMON WELDON POWELL Damon Weldon Powell, age 92, of the Northbrook Community passed away Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Atrium Health Lincolnton. He was born August 19, 1927 in Lincoln County to the late Arcie Miller and Pearl Houser Powell. Damon was a veter- an of both the United States Army and the United States Merchant Marines. He was also a mem- ber of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church where he was always active for over 40 years. He was a former Sunday School Superintendent, he assisted with keeping the water moni- tored, and kept the signage updated for the church. He was always willing to serve where he was needed. Damon retired after 38 years of driving from Carolina Freight. He was a mem- ber of the Fallston Masonic Lodge #356 A.F. & A.M. and an honorary member of sev- eral local lodges. He served as Past Master of the Lodge and received his Tyler of Distinction for being in the Lodge over 50 years. Damon was a former volunteer fire- man and founding member of Northbrook Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing and trav- eling, which included long trips out west and up the east coast. Damon always had a story to tell and was respect- ed by those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Betty Hoyle Powell; siblings, Patrick Powell, Martha P. Beam, and Frances Digh. Survivors include his chil- dren, Michele Tallent and husband, Perry, and Mark Powell and wife, Cindy; sis- ter, Jammie Lee Dawson; grandchildren, Lesley Crawford, Ben Powell and wife, Lindsay, Lily Tallent, and Heather Chapman and husband, Dustin; great grand- children, Zion Crawford, Lynsi Crawford, and Jordan Chapman; great great grand- children, Pryseis, Malachi, and Evelyn Crawford; special caregiver and family friend, Ms. Doey Byers; and numer- ous nieces and nephews. Mr. Powell lay in state on Saturday, May 16, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral & Cremation Services. A private graveside service will be held at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Her special niec- es and nephews were also very important to her. She had so many "adopt- ed" children and grandchil- dren that they cannot all be named here. She was always ready with a piece of cake, a cup of coffee, a warm piece of freshly baked bread, a bandage, a hug or a prayer – whatever you needed and whomever you were. Many people through- out the years enjoyed her "Morning Coffee Club" and Pancake Saturdays. Many babies were wrapped in her crocheted blankets and love. She loved her work as a nurse before retiring; her favorite part was working in the delivery room – even delivering some of her own grandchildren. She also loved to travel and was always ready to go on the next adventure – wherever it may be. Nell was an active member of Long Creek Presbyterian Church. She worked in the nursery there for countless years. She was a member of the choir and the Women of the Church. She lay in state for pub- lic viewing at Long Creek Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 12:30 to 1:30. A private funeral service was held on the Church lawn at 2:00 fol- lowed by interment in the Church cemetery. Social distancing protocol was in effect. PPE may be used at your own discretion. He was born on July 25, 1952 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Javan Lester Smith, Jr. and Carrie Mae Hamrick Smith. Javan completed his education at Shelby High School. He worked many years in textiles, mainte- nance and later years with MILDRED McKINLEY KISER Mildred McKinley Kiser, age 97 of Shelby, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 15, 2020. She is survived by her children, Barry M. Born in Cleveland County on November 7, 1958, he was the son of the late Carl Roberts Jr. and Louise Phillips Roberts.
