Les and Mary Ashby, corps ad- ministrators in Shelby since the spring of 2015, will begin their sixth year of local leadership in June, serving Cleveland and Rutherford counties. "We're thrilled to be serving here and look forward to con- tinuing work with our local ad- visory board, staff and volun- teers as we face future needs," said Ashby. Advisory Board Chair Faye Hassell called the news "sim- ply overwhelming." "We have been so fortunate to have them in leadership since 2015, as they are both assets to The Salvation Army," said Hassell, former director of United Way in Rutherford County. "I am proud to say I've nev- er had an opportunity to work with more Godly community leaders than the Ashbys." The sergeant said highlights of the past fi ve years include opening two new Family Stores - one in each county. The couple is also grateful, he said, "for being able to in- crease our services in both our community and in our church family." Food pantry and fi nancial assistance have continued amid the current COVID-19 challenges, Ashby said, but the stores have been closed recently following state guide- lines. "We plan to reopen Monday, May 18," he said. Income from those stores in Shelby and Forest City bolster the services the Army is able to provide. Short-term and long-term goals, he said, will depend on the outcome of a recently com- pleted Mission Planning Study. The Ashbys and the advisory board are eager to learn those results, he said. Other than store closures, what unique challenges has COVID-19 presented? "Missing our church pro- grams and coming together as a church family," he said. The congregation has been partici- pating in online gatherings. The local ministry just an- nounced that it will receive a portion of $2 million donated by the State Employees Credit Union and the SECU Founda- tion. In addition, through United Way of Cleveland County, the Corps received $42,500 in government-raised COVID-19 funds, all designated for rental and utility help for people who have lost jobs or work hours because of restrictions caused by the virus.
