In the early 1900’s after the Cliffside Mill was built, a bell tower was erected to house this keepsake. It towered above the famous mill over the town. The bell was named “Get Up Bell” by the people of Cliffiside, most of whom were working at the mill. The bell beckoned everyone by this schedule: 5:30am- time to get up; 6:30am- leave home for work; 6:50am- ten minutes before start up time; 12 noon- lunch; 12:50pm- ten minutes until time to start back to work; 6pm- end of the day. The body gets many of its antioxidants through the diet. Foods like fresh fruits (including blueberries) and vegetables contain many naturally occurring antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C and E. Blueberries boost other health- related benefi ts. They may reverse age-related memory loss, according to a Tufts University study. And they may also reduce cholesterol and help prevent urinary-tract infections. For centuries, blueberries were eaten by the Native Ameri- cans and the food gained a special place in their culture. For instance, the blossom end of each berry -- the calyx -- forms the shape of a perfect fi ve-pointed star. Tribe elders would tell stories about how the “Great Spirit” would send “star berries” to feed the children during times of famine. Parts of the blueberry plant were used as medicine: Its leaves were made into a tea that was thought to be good for the blood, and its juice was used to treat coughs. In cooking, dried blueberries helped fl avor stews, soups and meats. Today, blueberries are just as popular as ever in the United States and around the world. According to the North American Blueberry Council, North America (with a thriving commercial business in the northeast United States and Canada) is the world’s leading blueberry producer, accounting for nearly 90 percent of world production. While blueberries are a summer- time treat and tradition in North America, they are available everywhere, from Iceland to Japan, and in every form: fresh, canned, frozen, dried and liquid.
